An AMD Matisse CPU has been spotted and it comes with 12 cores and 14 threads. The major highlight of the chip is that even though it is an engineering sample the single core performance is actually higher than the AMD Ryzen 2700X, which has 8 cores and 16 threads.
Adding cores does mean better multi-core performance but it can also mean lowering the clock speeds in order to keep the thermals in check but that does not seem to be the case for this AMD Matisse CPU. The engineering sample is called 2D3212BGMCWH2_37/34_N and the H2 at the end could indicate that this is a 3rd generation AMD Ryzen chip.
The base clock of the AMD Matisse chip is 3.4 GHz and it can boost to 3.4 GHz which might not seem very impressive but remember that this is an engineering sample. Keeping in mind that the current generation of AMD Ryzen CPUs can go well above 4 GHz you can expect the same from these AMD Matisse CPUs if not more.
AMD has confirmed that these upcoming CPUs will use the same AM4 socket. This means that if you already have an AM4 motherboard then you just need to update the BIOS and swap the chip. We have also got reports that AMD is working in the X570 motherboards that will come with PCIe 4.0. This will increase bandwidth for graphics cards that need the overhead.
The TDP of the chip is 105W which is decent for a 12 core part. It will be interesting to see how Intel is going to compete with these upcoming CPUs keeping in mind that AMD Ryzen 3rd generation is going to be based on the 7nm process and Intel is still having issues producing 10nm chips.
We will keep you updated regarding the matter so stay tuned for more information and news. You can check out the other announcements that AMD made at CES 2019 that included the AMD Ryzen 3 demo. You can also check out the best laptops that we saw at CES 2019.
