Respawn Entertainment has announced over at Twitter that their recent release Apex Legends has crossed 50 million players in its first month. The free to play battle royale game has been received so well that the numbers keep on rising.
When Apex Legends first launched in a surprise release in February, the player count hit 1 million in eight hours, and 2.5 million by the end of its first day. Jumping into the genre of battle royale where it is already diluted with many games, Apex Legends has taken over by storm. Even Fortnite took several months to reach 45 million players.
The 50 million player announcement was made by the CEO of Respawn Entertainment Vince Zampella, who thanked the community and also teased the first season update that is due this month.
Thank you to the 50 million players that have shown up in the first month since Apex Legends launched! You have all made this something special and there’s much more to come!
Though Fortnite is still ahead in numbers, with a total of more than 200 million players. Apex is quickly catching up if this trend continues. Fortnite is also available on many platforms, which add up the number of players overall. Apex on the other hand is only available on three platforms, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Lets not forget PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which had started the whole battle royale excitement in its early access PC release. Last year, the developer of PUBG had announced that the game has sold more than 50 million copies. But because of its free to play version on mobile, it has reached 400 million total players.
What this suggests is that rather than competing with other popular games with growing number of players, the trend highlights that the battle royale genre is still growing massively and that the three games; Fortnite, PUBG and Apex Legends are keeping it relevant.
