The news was revealed initially on PlayStation Blogpost. The beta testing will be part of PlayStation Preview Program. The beta testing will be available to only handful of testers who have previously participated in beta testing of PlayStation 4 system software.
The blogpost also mentioned that PSN users will be able to change their online names for as many times they like. However, the first time PSN name changes will be completely free and other than that users will be charged. After the first time, users will be charged for $9.99 USD / CAD. If you are PlayStation Plus member, you can avail further more discounted price on name changes. PS Plus members will be charged as low as $4.99 USD / CAD.
Interestingly, once you change the name of PSN ID, there will be an option that will display your older ID. This feature will facilitate your friends as they can recognize you better after the name change of your PSN ID. After that, once your friends decide which ID they would like from to view you, they will be restricted to it only.
The blogpost further mentioned that all games after April 1, 2018 will be subjected to PSN name changes only. However, few most played games before the afore mentioned date will also be subjected to name changes.
The name change PSN ID will no be available for all PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita games. Users may encounter problems in some applications and games while changing the name.
The beta testing is scheduled to end by November 2018. After the beta testing program becomes stable and successful, hopefully, PlayStation user will be able to change their IDs by 2019.
