Doom is now a 25-year old franchise. Most franchises do not last that long but Doom is still going strong with the upcoming title, Doom Eternal. Id Software, the developer behind Doom has got a very successful franchise on its hands.
Executive producer Marty Stratton talked about different aspects of the game in a recent interview. Doom Eternal is supposed to launch on the PS4 and Xbox One but Stratton mentioned that the tech is scalable so Doom Eternal could be released on the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett when they come out next year.
He mentioned that the engine is highly optimized and can run on everything from the Nintendo Switch to a high-end PC. Marty Stratton was asked about his opinion regarding the next-generation of consoles featuring SSDs for faster storage. Here is what he had to say regarding the matter:
They’re building better tools for us to make better games and that’s exciting. We don’t feel like there are any barriers for entry for us or consumers at this point. It will be exciting to see what we’re able to do with it for sure.
Stratton was asked about Ray Tracing in Doom Eternal and he mentioned that it is something that is planned for the game. Right now the developers are focused on finishing the game so that everyone can play it. Ray Tracing means better graphics but it does not mean more players. This is something that the developer is going to look into down the line.
It is possible that Doom Eternal will not support Ray Tracing at launch but the support for the feature will be added later on. Stratton also talked about Orion technology. He mentioned that the company has been working on this for a couple of years. Here is what he had to say about the new technology:
Where as Google with Stadia and Microsoft with xCloud are solving things through hardware, we’ve applied our expertise in rendering engines to create this suite of technologies that basically just make it a lot faster to go from the renderer to the player. I don’t know exactly how detailed they’re getting with some of those techniques, but this should help literally every streaming platform out there – Stadia, xCloud or anything else – and give gamers a better experience.
It will be interesting to see how Orion technology makes things better for people that are interested in streaming games rather than buying PCs and consoles. With Google Stadia and Microsoft xCloud around the corner, this could make things much better for game streaming especially Doom and other games by Id Software.
Let us know what you think about Doom Eternal and whether or not you are interested in playing the game when it comes out on November 22nd, 2019.
