Before you go for this boss battle, you need to consider taking an NPC along to fight with, who is Nepheli Loux, standing right before the entrance where the boss battle will commence. Nepheli does not have powerful attacks but can take a lot of hits, while distracting the boss away from you, allowing mages to stand back and cast spells for damage, or get closer to the boss for melee attacks if you can find an opening.

You can also take some shields to defend against the boss’ fire attacks, but you can also use the several headstones in the battle are to take some cover.

While Godrick the Grafted may seem slow in his attacks in the first phase of the battle, he attacks using his two axes and relying on his wind attacks, depending on whether he is on the ground or going for an aerial attack. Attacks in the first phase are slow, giving you plenty of time to back off and go for heals. However, Godrick will look for opportunities to close the distance and can burst towards your locations with attack combos and heavy slams.

Godrick also relies on AoE attacks, which is why you would be looking to keep your distance anyway. This becomes more evident in the second phase of the battle where Godrick equips a dragon’s head in its left arm and uses it to spread fire around the battle area, forcing the player to flee. The AoE attack in the first phase can be identified when Godrick will raise his axe above his head and them slam it on the ground to create a shockwave around it. If you are a melee attacking character, this attack gives you a brief window to hit the boss as he raises the axe before unleashing it.

When you have depleted half of the boss’ health, Godrick will scream and wail, indicating the beginning of the second phase. This is where Godrick relies on the dragon head arm hitting you with a lot of fire attacks in the battle area.

One of the fire attacks in this phase is where he releases a wave of fire that travels horizontally along the ground, forcing you to dodge against the wave to avoid any contact. Another one of the attacks is where he uses fire to shoot up, which then rains down on the player. This attack requires you to back away as far as you can as it is very likely you will get hit.

Your attacking strategy should remain the same in both the phases, which is to attack when your NPC has distracted him away from you, use spells from a safe distance if you are a mage, or attack the boss after he completes his attack combos for a quick couple of slashes.
