Just a week after the new that Sony was going to stop production of the PlayStation Vita, the company has now officially stopped production of the portable console in Japan. The update about the news was shared on the Japanese PlayStation website stating that the production of the platform has now ceased.
Earlier this month it was announced that Sony was going to halt the production of the PlayStation Vita soon. An official date was not provided when that was going to happen, but it seems that February was the last month for the PlayStation Vita.
While the production of the portable console has stopped, you can still play a lot of games that are available for it on the PlayStation Store.
Sony’s PlayStation Vita was first launched in Japan in December of 2011, followed by a launch in a North America and Europe shortly afterwards. Over the years, the company had been showing less and less support for the console while it lasted over the several years. It was also recently announced that February was also going to be the last game that the console would be receiving any free games for March for PS Plus membership.
PlayStation Vita and its demise is always an open debate. While many blame the company for not using it to its full potential with continuous support, to others calling it unfair to captivate the attention of the increasingly smartphone obsessed market. The final blow was when the Vita lacked software for the high cost that it was sold for.
However, one of the biggest problems with PS Vita was its memory. The memory cards were very expensive and the fact that you had to switch Memory Cards just to use different IDs on the same console was very weird. The console’s architecture was pretty complex as well which did not facilitate porting games to it as well which led to a lot of titles skipping out Vita.
PSP was a huge success and Vita could have followed its footsteps only if Sony had given it a little more attention and paid attention to fan feedback and actually implemented that in the revised model of PS Vita.
