Red Dead Redemption 2 Crimes Guide
Refer to our guide to understand how the law works in Red Dead Redemption 2, and what crime-related activities you can get involved in progress in the story. There are a variety of crime-related activities that you can get yourself in to get rewards and money.
Player Wanted Level
If you are involved in any sort of illegal activity or commit a crime like a robbery or murder, your WANTED level goes up. This WANTED level is indicated on the top right of your screen. To escape the law and the pursuers after you, you can escape the region, kill the lawmen, or stay out of sight until they can call off the search.
To avoid being spotted while being hunted, you can look at the map that will locate a red circle on the radar and the direction at which the lawmen are looking at when finding you. Use this to your advantage to evade the area of attention.
The more crimes you commit the more your WANTED level will go up. This will progressively increase the level of lawmen, while each stronger than the previous. The bigger the crimes that you commit, the more serious the people will be after you. In situations where you have committed enough crimes and murders, the local lawmen will call for the US Marshals with heavier guns to hunt you down.
There are certain ways to get the WANTED level off of you. You can simply surrender to the lawmen or paying a bounty at the post office.
When you are approached by lawmen you can surrender, evade, or kill the lawmen to escape. Depending on your choice, if you choose to escape or injure a lawman, you will be a target of the shoot to kill.
The more crimes that you commit, the more vigilant the civilians and lawmen become in the area, which will eventually lead to the area being in lockdown. An area of lockdown is indicated with red on the map over the area. You can either pay off your debt to remove the wanted level, or wait and stay out of sight until the lockdown ends.
Deal with Witnesses
If a civilian spots you committing a crime, they will immediately try to warn lawmen. If the witness reaches the lawmen, they will then pursue you and your WANTED level will go up.
You can threaten the witness so that they don’t tell the law enforcement, but not all witnesses respond by being frightened and may threaten back. If you decide to kill the witness, you have to hide the body so that lawmen cannot trace back to you. All bodies are reported to lawmen and they are dispatched to investigate.
Disguising
When you have been witnessed committing a crime, and when you are reported, a physical description of your character will be displayed in order to help track your location to arrest you. You can avoid this by changing your appearance by changing clothes, altering facial hair, or even wearing a mask.
Robberies
There are many targets that you can rob, with some being easy or hard. you can rob these places solo or with the help of Dutch’s gang. Keep a lookout for banks, shops, homesteads and camps on your map. Once inside any of these locations, you can threaten the occupants and rob them. Some occupants will fight back so you will have to deal with them.
In addition, you can also rob stagecoaches and trains which are loaded with valuable items. Get tips from people working at the stations who will tip you for what to loot.
Rustling
Fellow gang members may invite you to join rustling jobs where you can rustle cattle and horses from some ranches and farms.
Loansharking
Loansharking is a specialty if your character; Arthur Morgan, and it brings in a lot of money that is owed to Dutch’s gang. You can find loansharking jobs by talking to Herr Strass at the gang’s camp who will locate positions of debtors.
The debtors will be located with a $ sign on the map where you can go to collect money. Keep in mind; you cannot track debtors when you are being pursued by lawmen.
Fences
There are many shops that can accept your stolen goods in return for money. These places have shopkeepers that don’t ask you many questions about the legality of your possession. These shops can be indicated with an icon on the map. In these shops, you can sell horses at stables, however, they will fetch you a lower price.
Gangs
There are many rival gangs in Red Dead Redemption 2, which contain lots of outlaws and misfits. Gangs can vary in size and structure, with each having their own territory. You can find these enemy gangs’ camps and hideouts to loot them. These hideouts are hostile if you decide to attack them, but can fetch you a lot of valuable loot.
Bounty Hunting
You can try being the good guy by hunting down WANTED criminals. These criminals can be located on the notice board at the depot or at the sheriff’s office, displaying information of the criminals in the area.
