The director of The Last of Us Part II has revealed how the infected enemies will work, and how Ellie will be challenged in the game. The infected enemies, or the Shamblers, are the enemies that we got to see in the gameplay video revealed last month at the Sony’s State of Play stream.
The trailer showed Ellie fighting a lot of human enemies, but the ones that stood out were the infected Shamblers that are a breed of zombies that will not shy away from charging at you. All the while releasing a toxic gas around themselves for added danger.
Talking about the Shamblers, the lead director of the game, Neil Druckmann talked about how the Shamblers will work in the game.
In the first game, there is all this documentation about the different stages [of the infection]. Now we have to justify why there are different stages. Why are there mutations of these things? Without getting into it here, there is something about the environment and how much time has passed that has allowed these mutations to occur.
We have Runners that close the distance quickly. We have Clickers that move slowly but are one-hit kills. Shamblers provide this area of attack, where they have this cloud of gaseous acid that burns materials around it. It burns your skin. The way you saw it in this demo is that they’re mostly on their own. It gets really interesting because you have a cloud that hurts you when you enter it, but it also blocks your view, then Runners burst through it. So the combinations get really interesting.
The Last of Us Part II is releasing next year on February 20. Naughty Dog has also announced the various special editions of the game. This time, we will get three new special editions that you can purchase. The Collector’s Edition comes with a 12’ Ellie statue, a life-sized replica of Ellie’s bracelet, a custom Steelbook case, a 48-page mini art book from Dark Horse, a set of six enamel pins, lithograph art print, and five stickers. The digital content included in the Collector’s Edition includes a dynamic theme, six PSN avatars, a digital soundtrack, and a digital mini art book.
