Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn was a surprise hit when it released back in 2015. The interactive drama adventure game was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4. Developers have now revealed why there is no Until Dawn sequel in the works.
Many players wanted to see a sequel of the game, the developer has revealed that firstly it is focusing on the development of Man of Medan, which is part of the Dark Pictures Anthology, a series of horror installments, which is similar to Until Dawn. However, it spans across different themes and with different characters.
After Until Dawn, [many] started to request a sequel, and it still happens today, so we know there is a fanbase that likes this kind of thing. A lot of [creating The Dark Pictures anthology] is about our desire to serve that fanbase from our perspective and to serve us ourselves in what we love to do, which is do more stories and characters, and do it more frequently than one or two every few years.
Even if the developer wants to work on Until Dawn 2, there would be many challenges, as the original game allowed for a lot of different outcomes,
On an anthology, it’s a great opportunity to wrestle with a new subject, a new genre, and with characters that you can develop specifically for that story. You’re not tied to historical characters that you have to use. If we were making sequels, we don’t know who survived. We could probably work it out from your game save, but we don’t want to make a sequel to that. We want to make a different story with different people.
The news may sound disappointing to many fans who were theorizing more stories that a sequel can bring. But according to the Supermassive Games, a sequel is likely not coming anytime soon, or it may not happen at all. The studio is working on something new and if the can make another game with the same scope as Until Dawn, it can be great for everyone.
Hopefully, The Dark Pictures Anthology, which the studio is working on, can add to be a full sized experience as Until Dawn. Post your comments below.
