Below we have detailed how to start building in Valheim and how to unlock building recipes.

How to Start Building

The first thing you need to do is to get the most basic building tool, which is the hammer. To craft the hammer, you need to get some wood by either taking it from a tree or melee attacking a smaller tree to drop some wood. With enough crafting materials for the hammer, you can now craft it, and also use it as a weapon if you want.

For the purpose of getting more building recipes and options, you need the hammer to build a workbench. You should begin by equipping the hammer in your hand, navigate down to the Build Menu option on the lower right side of the screen. Right-click on the Build Menu which will then list all the building options you currently have unlocked.

At this point, you should start by building a workbench, which unlocks several more building recipes for yourself. Use the workbench to build all sorts of building items like a roof, door, ladders, and fences.

The hammer also works as a repair tool when your built structure starts decaying and needs to be repaired. Buildings or built items decay over time, which means you need them checked, and always have a hammer nearby.
