Roguelite Shooter Witchfire to Launch in Early Access This Year

Witchfire

Developer The Astronauts have announced that their roguelite shooter, Witchfire, will launch in Early Access on the Epic Games Store later this year. The game was revealed at the recent Summer Game Fest 2022.

The reveal at the Summer Game Fest event came with a gripping, first-person gunplay trailer across a stunning dark fantasy terrain.

Watch the game’s trailer below:

Witchfire is a first-person shooter from the creative leads behind Painkiller and Bulletstorm. A roguelite for people who hate roguelites, the game offers a challenging but satisfying gameplay experience, and with multiple roads to victory.

In the game, you step into a world where a deadly war rages between powerful witches and the Church. The witches are real and very dangerous, but so are the witch hunters in this alternate reality. You will be armed by the Vatican sorcerers with an ungodly array of guns and forbidden magic, as you combat dark terrors.

Witchfire is the second project from The Astronauts, following their very popular, award-winning title, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The game is built in Unreal Engine 4, boasting AAA graphics made by an indie team of only nine people. Players explore gorgeous, semi-open-world levels, featuring advanced photogrammetry and post-processing that create an immersive and realistic dark fantasy world.

Creative director and co-founder of the studio, Adrian Chmielarz had this to say,

Witchfire is a dream project for us. After The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, we’re back to familiar shooter territory, but with the benefit of 2022 graphics and design. Now we’re able to bring our dark fantasies to life with spine-tingling realism!

If you follow the game’s development, it was initially announced back in 2017 at The Game Awards, which means that it has since been in development for over five years now. The polished Early Access version will contain plenty of content to explore and a solid gameplay loop, featuring RPG elements.
