Microsoft has revealed the Xbox Series X specs in a post by the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer. The information shared in the post ranges from the hardware of the next-gen console, along with the various new features that it comes with.
Starting with the massive GPU, the Xbox Series X will have a custom-designed AMD processor that will have 12 teraflops of GPU processing. This is twice what the Xbox One X offers right now and will result in higher frame rates, large and sophisticated game worlds, and provide players with an immersive experience.
Xbox Series X is our fastest, most powerful console ever, designed for a console generation that has you at its center. This means a high-fidelity gaming experience enclosed in a quiet and bold design, with the ability to discover thousands of games across four generations, all with more playing and less waiting.
Delivering four times the processing power of an Xbox One and enabling developers to leverage 12 TFLOPS of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) performance – twice that of an Xbox One X and more than eight times the original Xbox One.
The post also talks about Variable Rate Shading and hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing. VRS will allow the developers the freedom to efficiently utilize the full power of the console. Developers can then focus on prioritizing individual effects on a specific game character rather than spending GPU cycles uniformly to every single pixel on the screen. The new console will also have 120 fps support which will allow developers to exceed the standard 60fps output.
This technique results in more stable frame rates and higher resolution, with no impact on the final image quality.
With the hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing, we can expect more dynamic and realistic environments powered by raytracing technology. This means true-to-life lighting, accurate reflections and realistic acoustics in real-time as you explore the game world.
The Xbox Series X will also come with an SSD storage that will drastically improve loading times and make fast traveling a breeze. The console will also come with a brand new feature called Quick Resume that will allow you to suspend multiple games, and resume a game from where you left off.
Xbox head also goes on to announce that they have partnered with the HDMI forum and TV manufacturers for features such as Auto Low Latency Mode and Variable Refresh Rate. The ALLM will allow the connected display to set to its lowest latency mode, while the VRR will sync the display’s refresh rate to the game’s frame rate. This will ensure smooth visuals without any tearing.
Finally, Spencer also touched upon backward compatibility saying that the Xbox Series X will feature four generations of gaming. This means that the new console will include Xbox 360 and the Xbox games.
