Bayonetta Detailed Guide – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Bayonetta Guide details everything that you need to know about Bayonetta in Super Smash Bros.

Introduction

Bayonetta’s main strength is air dominance and her attacks excel in the air. She is excellent for pressurizing others in air-to-air and her combos ensure that other players never reach the ground. She also has the ability to wall-jump and wall-cling. Her only downside is that she is slow and most of her attacks are much slower than even other slow characters in the game.

She can be easily overshadowed by a fast attacking character but once she gets going, she ensures that the combo leaves little behind so it is all about timing with her. You will need to focus on timing your attacks right so that you can easily counter for her slow initial combo starts. Her backside coverage is also poor leaving her back vulnerable for attacks.

Attacks

We have detailed Bayonetta’s moves below.

Grounded Attack

We have listed all grounded attacks in this section.

Neutral Attacks

Bayonetta has four neutral attacks. First two deal 1.4 damage each, the third one will deal 2.2 damage while the last neutral attack will deal 0.2×4, 0.5 and 5 attack as you build damage and increase number of point-blank hits by holding down the button. The first three attacks are normal pistol-whip punching.

If you finish the combo by holding down the attack button, Bayonetta will finish the combo with up to 10 low damage shots. These shots also pass through enemies so they will hit every fighter who come in their way. These attacks have zero knockback so other fighters can quickly strike back with their attacks. You can hold and perform the ending animation by holding the attack button after any of the three neutral attacks.

After the third neutral attack which is basically an upper-cut, you can easily perform a fourth neutral attack by double-tapping the A button. This allows Bayonetta to attack rapidly and will end the combo with a launching hit that will launch the enemies in the air thus taking them to Bayonetta’s territory. Hold down the button at this point to add more hits and increase the damage as well.

Dash Attack

Bayonetta’s Dash attack deals 10 damage. Bayonetta will rush towards the enemy and punch your enemy with her gun and knock them back. The attack is slow to start up but she will deal a decent amount of damage. Bayonetta will slide forwards a little as well after performing the attack so be mindful of the environment.

At the end of this attack, Bayonetta will need some time to recover which can be easily exploited if your opponent blocks the attack. Sometimes if you are lucky, Bayonetta will break through the block if it is not powerful enough and reach their other side which can prevent from you getting hit from a counter attack. Other than that, getting blocked at this attack is a bad idea.

Defensive Attacks

Bayonetta has two defensive attacks and both of them are intangible. Ledge attack will deal 9 damage to opponents while the Wake-up attack will deal 7 damage to enemies.

Tilts

Bayonetta can perform three different tilt attacks to enemies.

Side Tilt

Performing a side tilt can make way for a much larger combos which could be neutral combos or similar combos. When you perform the initial side tilt, Bayonetta will perform a side kick forward, pressing the button again at this point with add a high kick to this and pressing the button again after it will add another final kick which will make the enemies airborne and ready to be juggled.

Now you can follow them up and perform any of the air combos. If you hold the button during the side tilt, Bayonetta will take out her guns and fire upwards at increasing angles. These attacks are pretty weak when it comes to damage done to enemies. Also, if the enemy blocks them, you will be left in a very vulnerable position.

Up Tilt

With this attack Bayonetta will whip her pistol up and pass through the space ahead while firing her gun. This attack is helpful when you are ending a combo which makes your enemy airborne. This will further keep them in the air and you can later go after them with another air combo. The attack itself will not deal too much damage so it is wise if you follow up with an attack.

The best combo to follow it with is by using a Witch Twist and then double jumping and catching them with a front tilt air combo. On the other hand, Witch Twist followed by After Burner Kick back and forth also works great for maximum damage dealing. If you hold the button, Bayonetta will use her gun and shoot in similar way like the previous tilt attack.

Down Tilt

Bayonetta will sit down and use her leg to sweep the enemies in front of her. This move is excellent before you want to perform a slow combo. It is much faster than her other attacks and will give you the window to perform a slower combo after it. However, watch out if enemies block the attack and counter with their own, you will not have much up your sleeve to defend against it.

Smashes

Bayonetta can perform the following three smashes.

Side Smash

It deals 16-19.2 damager per hit. During this attack, a purple glyph will appear around her and she will unleash a powerful haymaker punch. This attack is yet again a little slow but this attack cannot be hit be enemies as it is intangible. It offers great knockback and can be used to knock enemies off the stage. It is also useful for escaping more aggressive opponents with a powerful kickback.

Enemies can block this attack but it will still damage their shield. The recovery time after this attack is huge which could lead to some serious counter attack from the opponents. You can follow up with a smaller attack to keep enemies at bay. After the punch, start pressing attack button again and Bayonetta will whip out her trusty guns for some decent damage dealing attacks.

Up Smash

Up Smash will deal 17-20.4 damage per hit. During this attack, Bayonetta will send Wicked Weave underground which will later emerge in front of her as a huge fist. Enemies caught in the range will be damaged. The damage area is limited to just around the fist and inside the circle where the fist comes out from the ground.

Just like other attacks, this attack takes time to launch and the after-lag is yet another story. Also the attack is only a frontal attack so there is no rear or top coverage with it. Even jumping or tumbling enemies can sometimes escape it unscathed. Hit enemies will be launched in the air but since Bayonetta will need time to recover, it is a lost opportunity to land a follow up combo.

Down Smash

A Down Smash will deal around 5,16-6 and 19.2 damage depending on which type of Down Smash you perform. During the initial phase, Bayonetta will stomp the ground which will summon Wicked Weave which will duplicate her attack with a massive stiletto stomp. This is a very slow move but it deals a decent amount of damage to the enemies. Even the uncharged attack will take a third of a second to land.

You will need to be very precise with this attack and keep time in mind as it takes quite a lot to land this attack. Third of a second might not sound a lot but in Super Smash time, this is a very long duration. You can add meteor smashing to this attack which will stomp enemies standing under a soft platform.

This attack will also stomp on enemies trying to grab the ledges at the edge of the stage if your timing is right. With perfect timing, you can make the enemies fall down with this attack even when they think that they are safe from all sorts of attacks. Blocking also does little to this attack as it will take a god chunk of shield with it.

Once you have landed the attack, the real problem comes in the form of recovery. Enemies can easily counterattack during this time. During this time, hold attack to fire ricocheting shots from her shoes. This is the least you can do here after the attack to keep enemies confused.

Grabs

Just when you thought Bayonetta could not get any slower, her grabs are also slow when compared to other fighters in the game. She can perform Grab attack, Front Throw, Back Throw, Up Throw and Down Throw. Front Throw will deal 10 damage and will throw enemies forward. Back Throw deals 3 or 6 damage and send the enemies flying backwards.

Up Throw deals around 3-4.5 damage to enemies and it will launch enemies in the air for a follow up combo. Down Throw will deal around 305 damage and will bounce the enemies for a follow up combo. After throws, follow up with combos, tilt attacks and neutral attacks.

Aerial Attacks

Bayonetta’s real strength lies in her aerial combat. We have detailed her aerial attacks below.

Neutral Air Attack

It deals 8 damage. This is a spin kick that will attack enemies at the front and keeps going in the front. The first kick deals the highest attack while the following attacks get decreased damage as the attack goes on.

If you hold the button in the air, Bayonetta will start shooting from her guns while spinning. You can also add a neutral attack here and hold it for the 10 gunshot animation. This, added with spin kicks really puts on a show while dealing damage to your enemies. You can perform this attack from any altitude.

Forward Air Attack

It deals 4, 3.3 and 7 attack depending on the attack sequence. The attack starts with a mid-air jab and follows up with tapping the attack button to add a swing-combo at the end of it. The second attack is a punch while the last attack of this combo is downward-slashing axe kick.

During this attack, you can also add neutral attacks for a more explosive attack. Press and hold the attack button to make Bayonetta use her guns for small attacks. The first two attacks will go straight and will deal chip damage to enemies while going down. During the third attack, hold down the button to add bullets above, below and down.

Back Air Attack

It deals 13 damage. This is great for attacking behind you. Bayonetta will attack behind her with a powerful kick. It is a little slower but packs quite a punch and knockbacks the enemy giving you time to follow up with yet another attack. Hold the attack button to add guns to this attack as well.

Up Air Attack

It deals 7.5 damage. This attack unleashes a flipping wheel kick right above you although it will hit enemies behind you as well during its initial stage. This comes handy if you want to keep enemies in the air for some more juggling. The lag after this attack is much lower as well when compared to other attacks.

After the attack has started, hold down the attack button to add gunshots to this attack. You will need to be very careful as this requires perfect timing because the attack itself is pretty quick. Enemies hit will be knocked off their feet. You can use side tilt to follow up and then any combo of your choice and then later launch them again in the air to keep the flow going.

Down Air Attack

It deals 9 in-air and 5 when the enemy hits the ground. In this attack, Bayonetta will land a kick right below her while she is in the air. The main damage is focused around her foot. If the foot hits the enemy, most damage is dealt to them. Hitting them with thigh or knee will have much lower attack damage than hitting her with your foot. Her falling speed also increases during this attack.

When she hits the ground, more damage will be dealt to the enemies if she is high enough. This makes it a two hit combo already. This move is the worst if the opponents block it. Of all her attacks, this one needs the most time to recover from and I highly doubt that your opponents will simply wait around until you recover from a failed attempt.

Hold down the attack button during this button to add some fireworks to this attack as well. Bayonetta will use her guns and fire 10 rapid shots at the floor once she has slammed down. If Bayonetta is too high, the gun attack will end before landing and after landing, follow up shots will not be fired.

Special Moves

Bayonetta has five special moves and we have detailed them below.

Neutral Special – Bullet Climax

This special attack deals 1.4×4 to 16 damage. This attack has two versions and Bayonetta will keep changing between them. During the first one, Bayonetta will fire four times from her guns in front of her. Second time, she will fire from the guns in her feet. During both attacks, you can keep pressing the special button to add up to 16 fires to the same attack. These are much more powerful bullets and they will do increased damage while they also have much better range than normal attacks.

If you want to cancel the attack after seeing someone coming to attack you, you can tap forward or backward to dodge roll and cancel the attack at any time during the attack. All your progress will be lost with the charge and nor charge will be stored. Jumping or sidestepping will not cancel this attack.

Side Special – Heel Slide/After Burner Kick

This special attacks 8 initial attack and you can add 0.5×3 and 5 damage to this attack by holding the button down. For air Side Special, the attack will deadly 7 damage per hit. If performed while diving, this will deal 6.5 while going down and 5 on impact with the ground. As you can see, this can be performed in three different ways.

If you are on the ground, this will be Heel Slide which is essentially you sliding at your enemies and launching them in the air. During the slide, hold down the special button and you will end the move with a special finisher attack. Three foot gunshots will be added to the end of the slide which deals decent damage. If you do not want to follow with the special attack, you can follow up with a juggling combo since enemies will be in the air once you are done.

If performed in midair, this attack will be After Burner Kick. Bayonetta will attack in a powerful air-to-air attack with no lag allowing her to follow with a combo right after landing the kick. If the kick lands on the enemy, you can perform it again on them during the same jump. This is one of her best moves.

Combine this with Witch Twist for the ultimate combo. You can also perform a dive kick version of After Burner Kick. After the attack has launched, press downward and Bayonetta will plunge down in the direction she is facing. After a hit, Bayonetta will get in air again ready for another After Burner Kick. Go for it. Simply landing on the ground will create impact damage.

Up Special – Witch Twist

This attack deals 3 damage and you can add 0.2×5 and 3 more damage to this attack as well. Witch Twist is Bayonetta’s fastest attack. For this attack, Bayonetta jumps up and carries the opponent with her. During this ride, she will continue to hit the enemy and then blast them away. This leaves them in perfect position for an After Burner Kick.

You can hold down the special button to add gunshots to this attack after the initial attack. After the attack has ended, you can follow up with any aerial combo or attack but we recommend that you follow up with an After Burner Kick and then another After Burner Kick.

Down Special – Witch Time

This is more of a defense attack as Bayonetta will flip backwards and get ready to counter any attack coming her way. Any incoming attacks will automatically trigger the Witch Time during this phase. If any attack hits her during this phase, everything is slowed down except her and gives her time to lash out at the enemies. This is the ultimate attack that can really confuse your opponents. If you spam this attack, you can make their match a nightmare and they will be hesitant to attack you every time.

Final Smash – Infernal Climax

Once your Final Smash meter is full, trigger your Final Smash and it will slow down everything around you except Bayonetta herself. A timer appears at the screen along with yet another meter. Fill this meter by hitting enemies before the timer runs out and Bayonetta will unleash her Final Smash attack.

She will unleash Gomorrah which is an infernal Demon and some on-screen buttons will appear. Press the buttons to continue the onslaught. As you press the correct buttons, the damage output will continue to increase.
