Marth/Lucina Detailed Guide – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Marth/Lucina Guide details everything that you need to know about Marth/Lucina in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Introduction

Both Marth and Lucina feature the fastest walk speed in the game. Although they both share the same attack moves and special attacks, their damage output is actually different from each other because Marth has the added feature of sweet and sour spots. On the other hand, Lucina’s attacks are balanced across her sword.

Apart from this, both have same fighting style so you can use the same tactics with both characters. Their sword has a very good range and allows them to attack their enemies from a safe distance. This means that even an attack is shielded, they have less chances of getting a counterattack due to the range.

If you time your attacks right, you can easily stop enemies coming towards you in their tracks. With both of them, you can easily play more aggressively and less on the defensive side. Although their attacks might be a little slow but they pack quite a punch and boast a very effective range.

Attacks

We have detailed Marth/Lucina’s moves below.

Grounded Attacks

This section of the guide details all of Marth/Lucina’s ground attacks.

Neutral Attack Combo

Their neutral attack is a combo of two hits. Marth’s combo deals 5 and 6 damage while knocking enemies away. Lucina’s combo deals 3.3 and 4.8 damage. Her second move also launches enemies away from her.

Both hits are powerful sword slashes with the second one being more powerful. This is excellent for taking jabs at enemies from a distance. The attack speed is also fast making it ideal for many situations.

Dash Attack

Marth’s dash attack deals 12 damage while Lucina’s dash attack deals 10.9 damage to enemies. While playing with Marth, if you hit the enemies with the tip of the sword, more damage will be dealt to enemies.

During running, they will use their sword to perform a powerful front swipe that will send enemies flying in the air. This attack is great for chasing after enemies and dealing some damage from behind.

Defensive Attacks

Both have same damage outputs for their defensive attacks. The ledge attack will deal 9 damage while wakeup attack will deal 7 damage to enemies.

Tilt Attacks

Marth and Lucina’s tilt attacks are detailed below.

Side Tilt

Marth deals 12 damage with his Side Tilt attack while Lucina deals 11 damage with her Side Tilt attack. Both of them can launch enemies away but if Marth manages to hit enemies with the tip of his sword, additional damage is dealt to enemies. For this attack, they will land a powerful sword slash that starts from bottom and goes up.

This attack is useful is many situations as it comes in handy against both enemies on the ground and in the air. Also, most of the time you can land this attack from a very good range which means that even of your enemy shields the attack, you will have plenty of time to recover.

Up Tilt

Marth deals 9 damage while Lucina deals 8.1 damage. Both can launch enemies in the air above them while Marth deals additional damage when enemies are hit by the tip of his sword. For this attack, they will swing their sword above themselves in a powerful slash attack. This attacks all enemies above both Marth and Lucina and is a solid anti-air attack for both.

The hitbox of this slash is also very big which means that it can deal damage to enemies in a big area without any trouble. The landing speed of this attack is also pretty fast which means that you can be pretty late with the attack but still manage to hit your enemies with it. Enemies sent flying above can be followed using additional combos.

Down Tilt

For the Down Tilt, Marth deals a solid 10 damage to enemies while Lucina deals 8.5 damage to her enemies. Both can knock back enemies while Marth can deal additional tip damage with her sword. Both of them will crouch to the ground and land a powerful thrust attack at their enemy’s feet in front of them. This is a very quick attack and enemies hit by this attack are knocked back.

Smash Attacks

Marth’s and Lucina’s smash attacks are detailed below.

Side Smash

Marth deals 18 damage with his powerful side smash while Lucina deals 15 damage with her attack. Both of them can launch enemies away from them while Marth can deal additional damage if he manages to hit with the tip of his sword. This is a powerful attack as they will perform a powerful sword slam in front of them.

Enemies hit by this sword slam are launched away from Marth and Lucina. The attack speed is so high that it can be considered one of the fastest side smash attacks in the game. Enemies unfortunate enough to be hit by the tip of Marth’s sword will have a very less chance of surviving an instant KO.

Up Smash

For this attack, Marth deals 17 damage to enemies and Lucina deals 14.3 damage to enemies. This attack sends enemies flying in the air above them while Marth deals additional damage with the tip of his sword. For this attack, both Marth and Lucina will launch above in the air with a powerful sword attack raised above them.

The hitbox of this attack is small but if enemies are hit by the attack, they are set for another attack combo after this powerful sword smash attack. If someone is hit by their feet, they are also launched up into the sword which makes this a safe attack if someone is close to them both.

Down Smash

Marth deals 12 damage with his down smash attack and Lucina deals 9.5 attack with her Down Smash attack. Enemies hit by this attack are launched away. Marth also deals additional damage to enemies if they are hit by the tip of his sword. This is a very powerful sweep attack. Enemies hit by the sword are launched high in the air. The recovery time is exceptionally low allowing you to follow up with more attacks.

Grab Attacks

The grab attack damage output is same for both Marth and Lucina. Normal grab attack deals 1.3 damage. Throwing them at the front or back will deal 4 damage to enemies. Throwing them up deals 5 damage while down throw will deal 4 damage to enemies. Up throw will launch enemies above them setting them up for follow up combos and attacks.

Down throw will bounce enemies off the ground which can provide the opportunity of yet another hit which can prove useful in certain situations. The best combos to follow after a down throw are back air or up air attack for a guaranteed hit. Grab speed and range is also very good for both fighters.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide lists all air attacks for both Marth and Lucina.

Neutral Air Attack

Marth’s neutral air attack deals 5 and 9.5 damage while Lucina deals 4.3 and 8.6 damage with both hits. This is a two hit combo attack where the first hit pops up enemies while the second hit sends them flying away from them. Marth’s sword tip deals extra damage to enemies in this attack as well.

Both attacks are powerful sword slices in front while the second one can hit enemies at the back as well. This attack is good for pushing enemies away from Marth and Lucina. The range of this attack is also very decent. Also, if you have blocked someone’s attack, use this attack to create some space while dealing damage.

Forward Air Attack

Marth deals 11.5 damage while Lucina deals 10.5 damage with this attack. This attack has good knockback and Marth can deal extra damage if enemies are hit by his sword’s tip. This is a very powerful top to bottom sword slash. This attack is excellent if you want to damage someone’s shield. If someone is trying to recover from a ledge, this attack will keep them from doing so.

Back Air Attack

Marth deals 12.5 damage while Lucina deals 11.9 damage with this attack. Marths sword tip can deal extra damage to enemies. This attack will force enemies to change direction if they are hit by it. For this attack, they will turn around in the air and land a powerful sword slash behind them. This attack also allows them to quickly change their direction in midair.

If someone is trying to recover behind you, use this attack to harass them and make it difficult for them to recover. This will not only land an attack on them but also set you up in a direction where you can plan your next attack move quickly.

Up Air Attack

Marth deals 13 damage while Lucina deals 11.4 damage. This attack will send enemies flying above in the air even more while Marth can deal extra damage if he lands the attack with his sword’s tip. This powerful overhead slash is excellent for juggling enemies above in the air. The launch is great which allows you to follow up with more combo attacks.

Down Air Attack

For this attack, Marth will deal 14 damage and Lucina will deal 12.4 damage to enemies. Marth’s sword’s tip can cause extra damage while the middle of the sword can cause meteor smash effect as well. For this attack, both of them will land a powerful downward slash which goes all the way to a 180 degree angle below them.

Use this attack off the stage and enemies will sent down to their deaths without any chance of surviving the attack. A certain angle of this attack also allows you to make enemies bounce off the ground which makes them in a very nice place for a potential follow up combo. Use this opportunity to dish out some additional damage to enemies.

Special Attacks

We have detailed Marth and Lucina’s special attacks below.

Neutral Special – Shield Breaker

Marth deals 10.3 damage with this attack when uncharged and 27.6 damage to enemies when fully charged. Lucina deals 8.5 base damage with this attack. This attack does 80% bonus damage to enemy shields when uncharged. You can also use the control stick to slightly adjust the angle of the attack up or down.

For this attack, Marth and Lucina will land a powerful shield breaker sword attack. You can hold the button to charge the attack up before landing the attack. If your enemy loves using their shield, this attack will make sure that their shield does not last very long.

If you completely charge the attack and hit the enemies with its sweet spot, it will deal 80% damage to their shields. You can also use this attack as a recovery tool from off the stage.

Side Special – Dancing Blade

This attack has three possible variations. You can either land a full four hit side special combo or skip the last two hits and land an Up Special attack or Down Special attack. Damage dealt is different for all variations. For the normal four hit combo variant, Marth deals 3,3,4 and 6 damage while Lucina deals 2.8,2.8,3.3 and 4.8 damage.

If you want to replace the last two hits with the Up Special, Marth deals 3,4 and 7 damage while Lucina deals 2.8, 3.3 and 5.7 damage to enemies. If you want to skip both variations and want to finish off the combo with Down Special, Marth will deal 4, 2×4 and 5 damage while Lucina will deal3.3, 2×4 and 4.3 damage to enemies.

The attack starts with a flurry of hits that you can end with an air attack or a ground attack. Air attack is a powerful air launch attack while the ground attack is yet another flurry of attacks. If you want to end with a powerful knockback attack, hold towards the enemy at the fourth hit.

If you want to end with a powerful KO attack, simply hold up at the fourth swing. This combo is very versatile and will help you in a lot of situations in the game and you can easily pick the best variant depending on the situation. However, you must watch out for enemy shields. You can also perform this attack in the air.

Up Special – Dolphin Slash

This attack deals more damage to enemies if you can hit them early with this attack. If hit early, both Marth and Lucina will deal 11 damage to enemies. If hit late with this attack, both of them will deal 7 damage to their enemies.

For this attack, Marth and Lucina will launch above in the air with their sword extended before them aiming above. Enemies caught in the range will be badly damaged. Damage is higher early in the launch so try to land the attack as early on possible to maximize the attack’s effectiveness.

Down Special – Counter

The real damage output of this attack varies with what type of attack is countered. It will remain same for both Marth and Lucina. However, maximum damage output of attacks sent back to enemies will be 26.4.

This is basically a defense move which can also send the damage back to enemies if they land a hit on you while Marth and Lucina are in the counter mode. The strength of the counterattack will depend on the type of damage that they absorb.

Final Smash – Critical Hit

For their Final Smash, both Marth and Lucina will lunge forward to land an insanely powerful attack on the enemy. If you manage to land this attack on an enemy, it will be a one hit instant KO. Enemies do not get a second chance after getting hit with this attack. Watch out as you might go off stage with this attack if you are not careful.

  1. Thanks for that ! But is there not a mistake in every strikes descirptions ? You always give the damages of each strikes and Marth’s damages are always heavier than Lucina’s. But since Marth has a tipper, i think this is stranger, knowing that you precise that Marth’s damages are even more buffed on the tip of this sword, if Lucina had weaker basic damages she would just be inferior.

    1. Hi Ordinn. The main difference is that even if you do not hit with the tip of Marth’s sword, his damage will still be higher than that of Lucina. But if you manage to hit with the tip, the maximum amount of damage is dealt to enemies which could be a little higher than the exact figure mentioned above in the guide depending on the enemy type, the exact impact part of their body and their health percentage. Health percentage makes a big difference on each attack’s damage output. At higher percentages, these attacks will be more powerful than lower damage percentages. Hope that clears it. 🙂 And coming to Lucina being weaker, her attacks indeed deal less damage for certain attacks even if Marth does not hit the same attack with the tip of his sword. Some attacks have similar damage outputs for both of them such as the special attacks.
