Phil Spencer Elaborates On Xbox Scarlett Higher Resolution, Refresh Rate

Phil Spencer Xbox Scarlett

Xbox Scarlett was announced during the Microsoft conference at E3 2019 and we got to learn plenty of details about the next generation console. We heard that Xbox Scarlett would offer support for 8K gameplay and 120 FPS refresh rate. That all seems incredible but what does that mean? Will we actually get games that run at 8K or 120 FPS on Xbox Scarlett? Phil Spencer talked about the performance of Xbox Scarlett to make things clear.

Phil Spencer elaborated on the matter and confirmed that Xbox Scarlett will be able to deliver the power needed to run games at the higher resolution or refresh rate but it is up to the developer to decide whether or not it wants to use all that power. It seems to be similar to what we saw with the Xbox One X.

The Xbox One X is capable of delivering 4K 60 FPS but not all games take advantage of the hardware to the full extent. First-party games to run at 4K 60 FPS but most games run at 1080p 60 FPS. In games like Rise of the Tomb Raider you can choose between 1080p 60 FPS or 4K 30 FPS and I think that is what we are going to see with the upcoming Xbox Scarlett as well.

Developers can run games at 1080p 120 FPS, 4K 60 FPS or 8K 30 FPS. It depends on the game and the developer. First-party games will most likely have a higher refresh rate and resolution and you might have the option to choose between the two. Xbox Scarlett is going to release in 2020 so there is a lot of time remaining. Phil Spencer did mention the following about the upcoming Xbox Scarlett:

Working with AMD, we were able to hit CPU, memory, bandwidth, and even SSD that was going to allow us to stream data fast enough to get to frame rates where we felt like the increased visual fidelity would be matched by the feel that we would be able to bring. And that was a design goal that we set for ourselves with Scarlett.

Let us know what you think about Xbox Scarlett and whether or not you think it has what it takes to take on the PS5.
