The Next Gran Turismo Will Go Back to Its Roots, Will Be Next-Gen

Gran Turismo

The Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has said that the next Gran Turismo will go back to its roots and it will be what the series is best known for. This was revealed by him in an exclusive interview with GT Planet during the Nurburgring World Tour event. He also made it clear that the next Gran Turismo is in development however the title is not coming out on this generation. It will be a next-generation title.

Gran Turismo Sport was released back in 2017 and it is not much old at this point however it is also one of the least popular games in the entire franchise. The game took a bold departure from the traditional GT formula and it was not until the last moment when Polyphony decided to add some singleplayer content in the game.

This is one of the main reasons why the game seriously lacks singleplayer content however with regular free updates, the game has now a pretty decent amount of content but still lacks the potential of the previous titles. The latest update added five new cars and a brand new track to the game as well.

Yamauchi stated that during his World Tours, he would see that fans would still bring GT2 and GT3 which meant that these are still the best GT games for the fans and sometimes the developers forget about the past while working for the future. This is enough for us to understand what the fans really want from a Gran Turismo game. His exact words to GT Planet were:

I think in terms of races themselves and physics GT Sport has really reached the best place that we’ve ever reached – we’re at a very good place. On the other hand, obviously we’re working on the next Gran Turismo already, and the world of sport we’ve achieved through GT Sport is something I’ve always imagined to be the future of Gran Turismo. We were able to establish that now.

I don’t normally play the past editions of Gran Turismo, but since I started doing the world tours, the players, they’re all young guys but they all bring GT2 or GT3 with them – like, how old were you when this game came out!? So I’ve had more opportunity to play them recently, and it’s surprising how much I’ve forgotten!

Gran Turismo Sport is still a wonderful racing game at its core and the racing mechanics it offers are massively improved from Gran Turismo 6. It is also one of the most pretty racing games in the market for the current generation of consoles. It also offers one of the best multiplayer racing action and the official FIA races are a huge addition to the mix.

What it lacks is content especially when compared with older versions of Gran Turismo. We do not even have to compare the game with its rival, Forza Motorsport to compare. We can simply take GT6 and compare GTS with it and see how much content GT6 offered and GTS is just an empty shell next to it.

However, it appears like Polyphony has taken notes of this and the next game is going to be one of the best ones in the franchise so far. It has not been officially announced at this point but it is a confirmed title for next-generation and we cannot wait to see Polyphony go back to its roots with it.
