The AMD RX 5700 is the latest graphics card from AMD that features the AMD Navi architecture and is based on the 7nm process. While the AMD RX 5700 is a new graphics card with PCIe Gen 4 and all kinds of new features, it does not support CrossFire.
CrossFire is just like SLI and allows the user to stack up multiple graphics cards. You could use 4 graphics cards in a gaming PC back in the day but Nvidia and AMD started shying away from supporting multiple graphics cards in recent years. Nvidia stopped supporting more than 2 graphics cards in SLI and the same was the case on the AMD side of things.
The GTX 1060 did not support SLI and the same is the story with the RTX 2070. The RTX 2070 Super has NV-Link support which is interesting. If you plug in a pair of AMD RX 5700 graphics cards into a motherboard there is no option for CrossFire. That is true, even with the new X570 motherboards.
AMD has confirmed that the AMD RX 5700 graphics cards do not support multi-GPU mode for DX9, DX11 and OpenGL games. Only DX12 and Vulkan games support multi-GPU mode.
When it comes to gaming, most people do tend to buy a single more powerful graphics card rather than two mid-ranged ones and scaling is not consistent across the board when we look at the performance of multi-GPU systems. There are too many variables that you need to keep in mind. If you are going to play games then you are better off with a single GPU. This is one of the reasons why I think AMD has opted not to support CrossFire for the AMD RX 5700.
Nvidia has been pushing the idea of using a single GPU for gaming for a while now. It is not surprising that AMD has stopped supporting CrossFire after so many years. You can still use the feature on higher-end cards but most people are not going to use them for just gaming. They will be used for more professional applications especially if someone plans on getting more than one.
