Phil Spencer Confirms No Streaming-only Xbox Is In Development

Streaming-only Xbox

Rumors had us believe that Microsoft was working on a streaming-only Xbox that would release sometime in 2020. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has now confirmed that there is no such console coming out any time soon.

There have been plenty of rumors regarding a second console in the works ever since Phil Spencer mentioned that Microsoft is working on architecturing the next generation consoles. Since then we have only heard about Xbox Scarlett. Even at E3 2019, Spencer only talked about a single console. That has got many to believe that the second console is no longer in the works.

Here is what Xbox boss Phil Spencer has to say about a streaming-only Xbox:

We are not working on a streaming-only console right now. We are looking at the phone in your pocket as the destination for you to stream, and the console that we have allows you to play the games locally.

Streaming-only Xbox

Microsoft’s Project xCloud is going to make streaming accessible across different devices, just like Google Stadia. So an Xbox that is meant solely for streaming does not really make sense keeping in mind that people will be able to stream games on their phones and TV. The servers at Microsoft are going to do the heavy lifting for you so having a home console for streaming makes little sense.

Spencer also talked about the launch of the Xbox and he mentioned that it was done wrong. In his defense, he was not the boss at the time and he has done a lot to turn things around. He is going to be the boss when Xbox Scarlett comes out so we will be able to see what the brand can do with proper leadership and a clear direction.

Let us know what you think about Microsoft not working on a streaming-only Xbox and whether or not that is something that you would be interested in buying.
