Battletoads Beginner’s Guide

Below we have detailed some general gameplay] and combat tips that can help you as a beginner in Battletoads.

General Gameplay Tips

While the gameplay of Battletoads can be tough, the game also helps you with subtle hints to aid you in combat or to aid you in solving puzzles and locating collectibles. As far as the puzzles and collectibles are concerned, the game will vibrate the controller when you walk near a collectible. This is the first indication that you can collect something in a certain area you find yourself in.

Hitting every object and making sure that you double-check every corner of a location will ensure that you don’t miss out on hidden collectibles. Random objects in an area can usually be knocked down or broken to reveal a collectible behind them. However, make sure that you complete the level where you find a collectible, or the game will reset your collectible and will not show it in the collectible list.

Choosing Difficulty

As mentioned before, Battletoads is a tough game, especially for beginners. Do not be shy in starting with the easiest difficulty of the game which is the Tadpole. This difficulty significantly reduces the challenge, while allowing you to focus more on the story of the game.

For more challenging gameplay, you can go for the Toad difficulty, which is also the normal difficulty setting. This setting gives you just the right amount of challenge, by increasing enemy health and strength more than what the Tadpole difficulty offers.

Lastly, if you want to experience the hardcore game that Battletoads is, you can for the Battletoad difficulty which is the hardest the game offers. In this difficulty, enemies not only have more health and strength but also respawn much quicker.

Combat Tips

Just like the game gives subtle hints of collectibles and puzzles, you can also look at the environment changes which are indications of imminent danger and enemies.

When you see a purple rat or NPC scurrying away, this means that enemies are usually heading your way and are about to pop up anytime soon. If you miss such clues, you will be a sitting duck to attacks and the enemies will catch you off guard.

The best way to engage in combat is to perform combos and know when to dodge. Performing combos will allow you to take them down more effectively while dodging at the right time ensures that you don’t get caught in one of their hits. Right before the enemy is about to attack, you will see an exclamation mark over them, alerting you to dodge away.

Not all enemies will be susceptible to your combos and attacks, and most will block them. To break their defense, you have to perform the Smash Hit to break their defenses. Enemies are also stunned or staggered when you hit them, this is your best chance to finish them off for good.
