After a massive leak from the latest Warzone and Modern Warfare patch, Activision and Treyarch have officially revealed the next Call of Duty game, Black Ops Cold War. Along with the World Premier trailer, the developer and publisher also revealed tons of new information about the game such as different editions, next-gen upgrades, and also the official reveal date of the Multiplayer mode of Black Ops Cold War. We also now know the exact release date of the title.
Before we jump in any more details, let’s check out the official reveal trailer first:
The new trailer describes the game as:
The iconic Black Ops series is back with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – the direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops, the original that started it all.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will drop players into the depths of the Cold War’s volatile geopolitical battle of the early 1980s. In a gripping singleplayer campaign, players will descend into the dark center of a global conspiracy alongside iconic characters Woods, Mason and Hudson, as well as new cast of operatives to stop a plot decades in the making.
Beyond the Campaign, Black Ops Cold War will deliver the next generation of Multiplayer and Zombies experiences, beginning with the Worldwide Multiplayer Reveal on September 9.
This confirms that Black Ops Cold War is a direct sequel to the original Black Ops game and it will bring back many of the characters of the original game such as Woods, Mason, and Hudson. The game will pick the story where the first one ends and will continue further in the Cold War of the early 1980s. So far, Activision has only revealed the singleplayer campaign of the game and the Multiplayer mode will be revealed on September 9, 2020.
The game will also bring the Zombies mode back to life. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is releasing on November 13, 2020, on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Activision has further revealed the official boxart of the game as well. Since the game is also coming on the next-gen platforms, players will be able to experience the new title on next-gen titles for a price. Unlike most games, Black Ops Cold War will not offer a free upgrade rather it will cost players $10 however the game supports cross-platform and cross-saves between generations and platforms which will make it much easier for players to upgrade to the next-gen when it arrives.
Fans of Warzone would be happy to know that Black Ops Cold War will fully support and further enhance the free-to-play battle royale mode Call of Duty: Warzone on both generations. The game will have three different editions for you to choose from and pre-orders are now live for all editions of the game.
- Standard Edition – $59.99
- Cross-Gen Bundle – $69.99
- Ultimate Edition – $89.99
The following table explains everything about what is included in each of the editions.

There will be an Open Beta of Black Ops Cold War as well however PS4 players will get access to the beta first as compared to other platforms. The game will fully support the Battle Pass system for Warzone that will allow players to earn free content and unlock new items when they purchase Black Ops Cold War Battle Passes. DLC will be free for the game and there is a lot of post-launch content planned for the game which will include Multiplayer maps and modes.
Probably one of the most confusing bits announced by Activision is how the publisher is handling the next-gen transition for the game. The very first thing to note here is that the transition is not free. If you purchase the standard edition of the game, you will be required to pay $10 to upgrade your game to the next-gen version of your platform. PS4 version will upgrade to the PS5 version while Xbox One version will upgrade to the Xbox Series X version of the title.
To make things smoother, you can purchase either the Cross-Gen Bundle which costs $10 more but will secure the next-gen version of the game right when you purchase the current-gen version or simply go for the Ultimate Edition which comes with both generations of the game and also a special Land, Sea, and Air Pack DLC pack. It contains 3 themed packs that have an Operator Skin, a Vehicle Skin, and a Weapon Blueprint.
So far, we know that both Xbox One and PS4 versions of the Black Ops Cold War will be playable on Xbox Series X and PS5 respectively so even if you do not upgrade, you will be able to play your old-gen titles on the next-gen consoles. However, if you want to avail the full features of the next-gen console, you will have to pay up the upgrade and get access to different features such as hardware-based Ray Tracing, Smaller Load Times, Increased Frames and much more.
A multiplayer reveal is scheduled for September 9 and further details will be shared about the announced Open Beta in the coming days as well.
