New reports suggest that the upcoming AMD APU lineup will feature both the old Zen 2 as well as the newer Zen 3 architecture. The report was published by Twitter User ExecutableFix and according to him, the upcoming Ryzen APU lineup will feature both the Zen 3 based Cezanne & Zen 2 based Lucienne APUs and both lineups will coexist together and will be branded under the Ryzen 5000 family.
The Specs for many Ryzen 5000 series APUs have surfaced and according to the early reports, AMD Ryzen 7 5800U and Ryzen 5 5600U will feature the Zen 3 architecture under the “Cezanne” family name while Ryzen 7 5700U & Ryzen 5 5500U “Lucienne” will feature Zen 2 design. Specs for even more Ryzen 5000 APUs have been uncovered by ExecutableFix including two new SKUs, the Zen 3 based Ryzen 3 5400U and the Zen 2 based Ryzen 3 5300U.
This confirms the old reports which had the same information about AMD planning to use two different architectures for its Ryzen 5000 APU lineup. In the Ryzen 5000 series APUs, the Zen 3 lineup is codenamed Cezanne while the Zen 2 lineup is codenamed Lucienne or Renoir Refresh.
The leaked specs show that the Ryzen 7 5800U will feature 8 cores & 16 threads while the Ryzen 5 5600U will feature 6 cores and 12 threads and both these will be part of the Zen 3 Cezanne family lineup. On the Lucienne Zen 2 family, the Ryzen 7 5700U will feature 8 cores and 16 threads while the Ryzen 5 5500U will feature 6 cores and 12 threads.
If this is true, then the performance difference between the two families will be huge. Looks like AMD’s main reason to split the lineup into Zen 2 and Zen 3 chips is that Zen 3 chips will be the flagship APUs and are going to be slightly more expensive than the Zen 2 parts and also their respective predecessors from the Renoir Ryzen 4000 lineup.
The AMD Zen 3 architecture has a huge 19% IPC improvement and an improved cache and latency design. We will have to wait and see how AMD is planning to release its AMD 5000 series APUs. The AMD Ryzen 5000 APU lineup is expected to make its first official debut at CES 2021 which is a few months away from now.
