A new rumor suggests that Apple is currently working on its own search engine to replace Google on its devices, as the deal between Apple and Google comes close to expire. The reason for Apple ditching Google seems to be the ongoing antitrust case on Google by the US Department of Justice
Currently, there is a deal between the two companies where Google pays Apple between $10b and $12b a year to be the main search provider on Apple devices. But that deal will soon expire and a reported antitrust case against Google by the US Department of Justice could prevent its extension and that may be the primary reason Apple is looking to have its own search engine rather than looking elsewhere.
Activity in recent times also suggests that Apple is looking to move away from Google’s search engine. In iOS 14’s home screen search, Apple has begun to link directly to websites, bypassing Google entirely. Apple is now showing its own search results and linking directly to websites when users type queries from its home screen in iOS 14.
Apple’s ‘Applebot’ which was first reported about in 2014, has been crawling the web ever since and Apple has allegedly increased its rate substantially recently. And the increased search volume on Apple’s crawler ever since the iOS 14 home screen search feature has been introduced means something is coming maybe very soon.
Also, Apple poached Google’s Search and Artificial Intelligence chief John Giannandrea 3 years ago and he is now Senior VP or Machine Learning and AI Strategy at Apple. This also furthers the case that Apple has been working on its own Search Engine for quite some time now.
It is currently unknown what shape or form an Apple search engine could take. If it will be an enhanced Spotlight on iOS and OS X devices or if it will be a full-blown website like Google, Yahoo, etc. We will have to wait and see what move Apple makes.
