Sony has confirmed that its upcoming PS5 console will not have SSD expansion support at launch. This means that you cannot attach an SSD to expand your console storage space right after taking out of the box.
This doesn’t mean that there isn’t going to be any PS5 SSD expansion support at all, as Sony will likely roll out an update pretty soon, allowing you to do so.
The confirmation was made by the company while talking to The Verge, but this shouldn’t come as a surprise as it was already revealed by the PlayStation hardware architect Mark Cerny back in March, talking about the technical aspects of the console.
According to The Verge, the SSD slot where you can attack an M.2 SSD will be disabled right from the box, which means that any card you insert in the slot will not be recognized by the console. If you picked up the information back in March when Cerny was revealing plenty of technical features of the console, you would already know about it then.
It’d be great if that happened by launch, but it’s likely to be a bit past it, so please hold off on getting that M.2 drive until you hear from us
The reasoning behind it was also explained in the same video, where Cerny explained that not all M.2 SSD are fast enough to keep up with the PS5, nor are they thing enough to fit in the SSD bay nor compatible with the Sony’s I/O controller.
If you are worried about compatibility or any other issue related to an M.2 SSD, Cerny has said that you would require to get an SSD with more than 5.5GB/sec of bandwidth over a PCIs Gen4 connection, while the SSD not having a large heatsink that it struggles to fit inside the SSD storage bay.
