Last week Steam announced that its desktop client now supports the new PS5 DualSense controller natively. The initial support was only basic and none of the advanced features of the DualSense controller were available to players. With the basic support, players who owned the new DualSense controller could use it to play their games on Steam just like they did with the PS4’s Dualshock 4 controller. However, with a recent update, some of the advanced features are now also available to players.
The new expanded support is currently only available to the users using the beta client of Steam where players can use some of the advanced features of the DualSense controller. These features include:
- Full support for the LED
- Trackpad
- Rumble
- Gyro
These features are now fully supported in different games that support them as well such as No Man’s Sky, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Death Stranding, and more. If the trial of these new features goes well in the beta client, a full public release will follow it down the line however a full release date has not been announced at this point. Developers will also be glad to know that the latest Steam client update also adds the support for Steam Input API for all games using and games using it are now fully compatible with the new PS5 controller.
If you need more information on the Steam Input API and how it benefits developers, you can check out the official blog post over at Steam. Furthermore, it appears like while the Dualshock 4 controller’s advanced features were not fully used on Steam, the DualSense might be a different case and we might see full-feature support down the line offering the same experience of games that it offers on a PS5 console. However, we will have to wait and see if this happens.
