E3 has officially announced that the biggest video game convention will not return in 2022 in either digital or physical form. Last year, E3 2021 was held as a digital-only event with only hosts and special guests appearing at the main event venue and earlier this year, the E3 management firm confirmed that the event will not take place physically despite the whole COVID-19 situation now slowing down around the globe.
A digital event was initially planned for 2022 similar to the previous year however Entertainment Software Association has now confirmed that the event will skip 2022 entirely. The association spoke to IGN detailing:
We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience. We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023.
E3 has been losing various companies during the past few years with the biggest example being Sony. Sony has been skipping E3 events since 2019 and has its own way of revealing new titles and updates in the form of State of Plays. Nintendo has its own Nintendo Directs which are online, digital presentations revealing their new products and updates are already-announced titles.
Xbox on the other hand takes a very active part in E3 despite having its own Xbox Games Showcases throughout the year as well. Last year, we saw a lot of new and old companies actively participating in the E3 such as Intellivision, Razer, Gearbox, Square Enix, Future Games, Mythical Games, Freedom Games, and Ubisoft.
While E3 holds a special place in all of the gamers’ hearts and June is considered the month of new game announcements, trailers, and teasers. This year, however, we will have to resort to other means to fulfill that need.
