Sonic Frontiers' Sound Director

With the release date for Sonic Frontiers right around the corner, SEGA is sharing more and more details about the upcoming title. The latest video shared by SEGA is basically a Q&A video with Sonic Frontiers’ sound designer Tomoya Ohtani, who offers us a behind-the-scenes look at how he created the soundtrack for Sonic Frontiers, and he also shared details as to how he has been working with the Sonic franchise for a long time.

Check out the Making the Music video for Sonic Frontiers below before we jump into the details:

In the video, Tomoya Ohtani begins by detailing how he started his work on the Sonic franchise. His first song for the franchise was for the Chao Challenge Race in Sonic Adventure 2 for the Pumpkin Hill stage for Knuckles. He also details that his favorite Sonic game when it comes to soundtrack composition is Sonic Runners which was a Sonic title for mobile platforms. For Sonic Frontiers, Tomoya Ohtani says that he had written music for the game 4 years ago and his favorite track from the game is ‘Endless Possibility’.

He moves further to explain that he was part of the game since its beginning and at the beginning, there is no game to look at and he had to work with the outline of the game, documents, and other materials such as the plot of the game. This results in music creation after creating all of these elements together. Research and exploration also play a key role in soundtrack creation early in the game development cycle. Tomoya Ohtani’s work on Sonic Frontiers began with the creation of the soundtrack of the Open Zone which is a new element for the franchise.

Kronos Island was his first target for music creation which he started with piano music based on keywords such as sadness, mysteriousness, and desolation. The hardest part for him was to express the immersive feeling of the Open Zone. Apart from this, creating a sense of excitement as an action game was also a challenging bit for Tomoya. Sonic Frontiers’ main theme is the best song featured in the game and it also features a nine-string guitar which is used in other music featured in the game as well.

He concludes the video by saying that ending themes leave a pleasant aftertaste to video games and after listening to ‘Vandalize’ by ONE OK ROCK, he was looking forward to fans of the game listening to it as well. The full game will also feature more guest singers as it features 6 composers besides Tomoya Ohtani who is the main composer of the title. With the game launching next month, you can check out the previously released Sonic Frontiers Prologue as well.
