Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s new DLC Legacy of the First Blade Part 2 – Shadow Heritage has sparked some backlash for Ubisoft as at the end of the game your character indulges in a heterosexual relationship which results in a baby. This does not take into account the choices the player made in the main game or the DLC. Players did not like this at all and Ubisoft has apologized and has called this a “learning experience”. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey devs have learned that ignoring gay characters was not the way to go.
Creative director Jonathan Dumont mentioned that players will not be forced into a “lasting romantic relationship” with the DLC character and that players can choose to move on if they like. The following is what he had to say in this regard:
Reading through player responses of our new DLC for Legacy of the First Blade, Shadow Heritage, we want to extend an apology to players disappointed by a relationship your character partakes in. The intention of this story was to explain how your character’s bloodline has a lasting impact on the Assassins, but looking through your responses it is clear that we missed the mark.
It has been confirmed that the DLC will not get any story changing update and that the trophy players get for making a baby will be renamed. It is called “Growing Up” right now and this implied that being gay or not having a child was not adult enough. The following is what Dumont had to say in this regard:
It was definitively not written with that intention. This was an oversight in the review process and we very regrettably missed it. We share the frustration of players who find this offensive and the achievement/trophy name will be changed when DLC 1.3 patch is available.
Jonathan Dumont also mentioned that the team will try and do better so that choices that players make in the main game are carried forward in the DLC as well. I am sure that this is something that the fans will appreciate in the future. Not ignoring gay characters in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey would be the right thing to do in the future.
