ASUS has introduced a new mounting system for M.2 SSDs in one of its motherboards. The new mounting system for the M.2 SSDs no longer requires a screw for installation. Rather, the new system is a latched mounting system by ASUS and instead of using screws, there is a plastic latch that allows the SSD to be held in securely by simply flipping the latch around with your thumb.
Currently, most motherboards use screws to hold M.2 SSDs in place. It was not difficult to install the M.2 SSDs before but was somewhat bothersome as you would need to handle and take off screws while installing the SSDs.

ASUS’s new mounting system has completely removed the need of screws and now the piece of notched plastic sits on a screw on the anchor side of the M.2 slot, fixes that problem since you don’t have to deal with removing and replacing any screws whatsoever. The plastic latch never needs to be removed from the motherboard, although time will tell how well the plastic holds up over repeated use.
This new ASUS latched mounting system will be arriving in ASUS’s Z590 Republic of Gamers motherboard series. The new M.2 mounting system will be coming to Asus Z590 series motherboards in the near future, once Rocket Lake supported processors arrive.
We may see this new mounting system being adopted by other motherboard manufacturers as well. Even ASUS may introduce the new M.2 SSD mounting system to its other motherboard series as well like ASUS TUF and ASUS prime.
It will surely expand to ASUS’s Republic of Gamers AMD motherboards, and perhaps will even be sold separately as an upgrade for current M.2-capable boards. Intel 11th Gen Rocket Lake-S Desktop CPUs are said to release in late March of 2021 so we can expect these motherboards to also drop around the same time.
