Sony recently announced that it is acquiring developer and publisher Bungie which is known for some of the best shooters including Halo and Destiny 2. This news of a major acquisition comes after last week Microsoft announced that it is acquiring publishing giant Activision/Blizzard which is behind some of the biggest video game franchises including Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon. Now Sony has detailed additional information of what could be the future of its Bungie acquisition.
The announcement of Sony acquiring Bungie was made on the Official PlayStation Blog by none other than Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment. However, much to fans’ surprise, Jim started the news by saying that despite the acquisition, Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher. This means that the current title Destiny 2 and all future titles by Bungie will continue to remain on all platforms including Xbox.
Jim Ryan further details that the acquisition is for ‘Bungie’s world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services’. This means that the community has nothing to worry about because this acquisition will not effect current and future developments by Bungie as they will remain multi-platform including Destiny. Commenting on the acquisition, Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios said:
I have spent a great deal of time with the senior team at Bungie and it is clear their experience and skills are highly complementary to our own. We will be ready to welcome and support Bungie as they continue to grow, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this incredible team.
Pete Parsons, CEO of Bungie, also said:
In Sony, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart. Like us, Sony believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.
