E3 or Electronic Entertainment Expo is the biggest video game convention of every year however E3 2020 is not looking up so good. First, we had a lot of media backing out from attending E3 2020 because of the E3 website hack last year which released confidential data of many video game journalists. We already know that Sony is skipping E3 2020 as well. Now recently, the coronavirus outbreak in California has further threatened the occurrence of E3 2020 happening on time.
California has declared a state of emergency on Wednesday after two more people died in California and Washington. California is the second state of the United States where people have actually died because of coronavirus. Both these states combined have over 50 known cases of coronavirus and since E3 takes place in Los Angeles, the state of emergency can certainly delay 2020’s event.
The ESA released an official statement in which they said that The ESA is currently actively assessing the coronavirus situation and its potential threat to the annual video game convention. Their official statement details:
The health and safety of our attendees, exhibitors, partners, and staff is our top priority. While the ESA continues to plan for a safe and successful E3 show June 9-11, 2020—we are monitoring and evaluating the situation daily. Our E3 team and partners continue to monitor COVID-19 via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). We are actively assessing the latest information and will continue to develop measures to further reduce health risks at the show.
Gamers around the world look forward to E3 every year because it is the biggest video game convention every year and some of the best games are revealed this year. This year every gaming event is extra special because 2020 is the year of next generation of consoles however the coronavirus outbreak around the world has taken its toll on every industry and that also includes the video game industry.
At this point, we are not sure whether E3 will be pushed forward or canceled. Different video game conventions and events have already been delayed because of coronavirus namely GDC in San Francisco and Taipei Game Show. If the threat of the virus continues, we might not even get the next-gen consoles this year as the manufacturing and components mostly come from China. At this point, we can only wait and see.
