Developer Maze Theory has released four new behind-the-scenes videos for their upcoming VR game Doctor Who: The Edge of Time. Doctor Who: The Edge of Time is a feature-length VR video game that features the world of Doctor Who filled with aliens, mystery, and wonders. The brand new videos shared by the developer showcase some of the monsters that will be featured in the game when it comes out.
Doctor Who: The Edge of Time is inspired by the show’s 55-year history and it stars Jodie Whittaker who plays Doctor Who in this brand new and fully interactive adventure. The new videos also include an exclusive developer diary chronicling the developer’s journey in bringing the universe of Doctor Who to VR. You can check out the developer diary below.
One of the monsters revealed in the videos is the Hydorks. Hydorks are exclusive to Doctor Who: The Edge of Time and they have been never seen before. These are vicious amphibians who serve the races like Stenza and Zygons as their guards. Check them out in the video below.
Another humanoids species called Weeping Angles also get a brand new video and they have been fully realized in VR for the first time. These creatures are as old as the universe itself. Check out their video below.
Lastly, the developers have also shared a behind-the-scenes video for Daleks which is a race from planet Skaro. They are led by their leader Davros who is an evil scientist. Their species was mutated from a nuclear war and later Davros genetically modified them by adding tank-like robotic shells and removing their emotions. You can check them out in the video below.
The developer also shared some fun facts about the game which are:
- The weeping angels utilize a classic horror game mechanic, so the team has been excited to work with them.
- Daleks in VR are incredibly imposing. Getting up close to them, seeing the textures of the metal and reflectivity are awe-inspiring (in a terrifying kind of way!).
- Jump scares work really well in VR! They are a brilliant technique. Be warned.
- Being able to create new monsters for the show and add to the canon is hugely exciting. We’re making Doctor Who history!
- When working in VR, because people can move around, get up close and experience the monsters from any angle, it’s really important to get the quality and accuracy just right. It feels very real!
Doctor Who: The Edge of Time is slated to release in September 2019 on PS VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Vive Cosmos.
