It turns out that gaming can have a positive impact on your romantic relationship. Gamer couples that play with each other stay together and the likelihood of breaking up due to video games is minimal.
1000 people were surveyed to see whether gaming had a positive or negative impact on their relationships. According to the results. one in three couples aged between 18-24 claim that gaming helps their relationship. This could be any game, you could be playing Mario Kart or Call of Duty together.
The research did indicate that playing Mario Kart did have the most positive effect on gamer couples. Call of Duty and Skyrim came in at second and third place. Out of 1000 people, only 42 mentioned that gaming led to a breakup.
Ryan M. Earl, a senior associate therapist at the Chicago Center for Relationship Counseling mentioned that gaming can be a form of therapy. It can be used to help people to work together to meet a common goal. Here is what the had to say regarding the matter:
Gaming can be therapeutic for couples. Video games can help people work together for a common goal, share challenges, compete, joint problem-solve, and more. Video games, like anything else, can be a shared activity, and shared activities can foster intimacy between people.
It should be noted that this applies to the millennial generation that grew up with video games. Older generations can see people that play video games as irresponsible. The data is different for different generations. Dr. James Gaskin, video game developer and professor at Brigham Young University mentioned the following about the difference in generations:
Romantic partners from the millennial generation grew up with video games as a large part of their lives. Therefore, gaming is simply more natural and accepted. Whereas with older generations, a partner who played video games was perceived as juvenile and irresponsible.
