Gears 5 Will Have “Player-friendly” Microtransactions Says Dev

Gears 5 Microtransactions

Microtransactions are controversial for sure and calling them surprise mechanics does not help. Gears 5 developer, The Coalition’s Ryan Cleven has confirmed that Gears 5 will indeed have microtransactions but he claims that they will be “player-friendly”.

He mentioned that the team has “a very player-centric, player-friendly way of doing customization and monetization.” This might be another way of calling them surprise mechanics for all I know. We will know for sure once the game is out. This is what he had to say regarding microtransactions in Gears 5:

We were sort of reading the tea leaves, I guess and we were one of the earliest to adopt card packs inside our game. We thought we’d done it quite elegantly in Gears 4 — some people liked it, some people didn’t. […] We put the challenge to ourselves: can we still provide purchasable things to players that want to purchase and still have the rest of the players really enjoy the system? That was a challenge we set right from the beginning of Gears 5.

Gears 5 Horde Mode will feature characters with ultimate abilities and we got to see some gameplay at Gamescom 2019. The game is also going to have a special edition Xbox One X alongside special accessories. These include a keyboard, mouse, controller and more. You can check out a sneak peek of the special edition console below:

The game will be available on Xbox One and PC. If you are subscribed to Xbox Game Pass on Xbox or PC then you will be able to play the game at launch. The game does look impressive but I do not know how the fans are going to feel about microtransactions in Gears 5. It will all depend on the implementation.

Let us know what you think about Gears 5 featuring microtransactions and whether or not you are interested in playing the game when it comes out September 6, 2019.
