This guide will show you how to upgrade your house in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Upgrading your house allows you to increase the size of your house, relocate it to wherever you want, and allow you to add additional rooms in your houses.

Aside from the exterior looks of your house, you can greatly expand your house with extra rooms, a basement, and a top floor which gives an entire new floor for your house.

How to Upgrade Your House in Animal Crossing New Horizons

After you have settled in the game, and have gotten used to your tent, it is now time to explore new possibilities of having a real house on your island. You can kick start this process by first taking a loan from Tom Nook, and then having a house of your own. After you have slowly repaid the loan, you will then have more options to upgrade your house.

It is worth mentioning that your house cannot be upgraded in a few quick steps, and requires some grinding and a lot of playing. This is because purchasing anything will require Bells, and these are only obtained by completing the many tasks available at hand on your island.

The first real upgrade you can have for your house is after you pay off the initial 98K loan to Tom Nook. With an additional cost of 198,000 Bells, you can increase the size of your house to an 8×8 grid. This will give you an additional storage room for you to drop and store your items.

Looking to upgrade even further will cost you 348,000 Bells, which will give you an additional 6×6 grid to the back of your house adding a Back Room. Further upgrading the house with a Left Room attached to your house will cost you 548,000 Bells. The upgrades will increase the more additions you make to your house.

Let’s look at all the rooms you can have and how much they cost:

  • Tent to First House – 98,000 Bells
  • 8×8 Increase with Storage – 198,000 Bells
  • 6×6 Back Room behind the house – 348,000 Bells
  • 6×6 Left Room on the side of the house – 548,000 Bells
  • 6×6 Right Room on the side of the house – 758,000 Bells
  • 10×6 Top Floor – 1,248,000 Bells
  • 10×6 Basement – 2,498,000 Bells

Upgrading will require a lot of Bells if you are looking to expand your house, and will take quite some time before you can have it fully upgraded. However, slowly you can set up small goals and then think about expanding your house further. Start with expanding the grid of your house which will give you a Storage room for your items. Inventory management can be quite tough and will have you dropping valuable things to make space for more if you have no other option.
