Apple revealed their new lineup of Phones as the iPhone 12 yesterday in their ‘Hi, Speed’ event. The new iPhone 12 lineup features a total of 4 new phones; the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. And a surprise to many people is that none of the new iPhone 12 phones will ship with EarPods or the charger in the box.

The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max will only ship with the phone itself and a single USB-C to Lightning converter dongle. According to Apple, they have taken this step to help reduce eWaste from its products by removing things from the retail box which the user might already have access to. In the Keynote, Apple said:

As part of our efforts to reach our environmental goals, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini do not include a power adapter or EarPods. Please use your current Apple power adapter and headphones, or purchase these accessories separately.

According to Apple, they were able to reduce the size of the retail box of iPhone by up to 70%, just by removing the charger and EarPods alone. All 4 iPhone 12 feature the new A14 Bionic chip, Apple’s first 5nm chipset. All 4 phones also have 5G modes which will take advantage of the newest generation of cellular internet.

The smaller iPhone 12 mini has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display while the iPhone 12 ups it to 6.1 inches. Both models feature a 2340 x 1080 resolution supporting 1200 nits of peak brightness and are HDR10 compliant. The Pro models have a 6.1″ screen on the 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max has a 6.7″ display. Both Pro displays can also reach 1200 nit peak brightness.

Apple is shipping the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro with a USB-C to Lightning cable, meaning that you must have a compatible USB-C charger to make it work. If you are switching over from Android that happens to be a non-USB-C device, you may have to buy a charger separately.
