Jupiter Hell Leaving Early Access on August 5, Full Release Packed with New Features

Jupiter Hell

Developer ChaosForge and publisher Hyperstrange have announced the release date of their early access title Jupiter Hell. Jupiter Hell has been in Steam Early Access since March 2019, and now after more than 2 years, the developer is ready for the 1.0 release of the title packed with new features and content. At launch, the game is limited to a PC release only via Steam, GOG, and Humble Bundle and it will cost $24.99 but there’s a 10% launch discount.

Jupiter Hell started its life as a Kickstarter project and it is the spiritual successor of the game DRL. DRL was originally called DOOM the Roguelike however after receiving a Cease and Desist from Bethesda, the title was renamed to DRL and now Jupiter Hell is launching as a spiritual successor to DRL. There are two important names connected to Jupiter Hell.

Jupiter Hell

The first one is John Carmack who himself, backed the Kickstarter campaign of Jupiter Hell and then you have Mark Meer, who voiced Commander Shepard. Apart from this, the 1.0 release of Jupiter Hell will come packed with features, some of which are detailed below:

  • Dante Station – The 4th and final act in the gripping story of one hero’s survival against Jupiter Hell. Final boss battle included!
  • Trials Mode – a new customizable and moddable way to enjoy Jupiter Hell your way – it’s your run, your scenario, your funeral.
  • Arena Mode – Defend against wave-based attacks of enemies, with quicker leveling and item acquisition between waves.
  • Endless Mode – Go through fully randomized levels without episodes, branches etc, and see how deep you can get.
  • Classic Mode – No story, no branching areas, no special levels, nothing to distract you from sweet, sweet ripping and tearing through demonic hordes.
  • More to be revealed!
  • Oh, hey, did we mention Mark Meer VO?

It is a turn-based roguelike and is a throwback to classic 90s sci-fi shooters. In the game, you play as a lone space marine who is up against overwhelming demonic forces after his ship is shot and it crashes. You will need to rip and tear zombies, demons, and other monstrosities that come in your way using old-school weaponry such as shotguns, chainguns, railguns, and a chainsaw. All of this is presented in a cool CRT monitor-like display and heavy metal playing in the background.

Key features of the game include:

  • Tactical, turn-based combat with real-time responsiveness – Benefit from classic roguelike turns with modern shooter sensibilities. Controls are immediate and accessible while retaining the back-end depth of a turn-based RPG.
  • Meaningful RPG progression – Customize your character with new weapons, items and abilities gained as you progress through a permadeath-prone hell. Beat the game to unlock more difficult challenges rather than grinding to make the game easier.
  • Randomized levels set all over Jupiter’s orbit – Blast through procedurally generated civilian sectors, military space bases, and mining colonies on the violent moons of Jupiter. Every playthrough you’ll find new ways to experience familiar settings.
  • Original shooter roguelike lineage – Jupiter Hell is the crowning achievement of a 20-year roguelike development saga, coming from ChaosForge, the team that’s been making top-down, cosmic hell roguelikes since 2002.

Jupiter Hell is available on Steam right now in Early Access however if you want to jump in the full game, it is releasing on August 5, 2021. At this point, there is no word on a console release so if you want to try out the game, you will need to play it on a PC.
