Larian Studios Shares Interesting Death Insights from Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access Launch

Baldurs Gate 3 Death

Baldur’s Gate 3 is now finally out in Early Access on Steam and in anticipation of the amazing launch response, developer Larian Studios has shared some interesting death insights from the game along with a ‘Heat Map’. After the overwhelming launch of the title that caused the Steam Store to crash and the game’s own client to crash as well on the website, Larian is now already gathering feedback and data from players currently experiencing this great RPG.

According to the latest released behind the scenes insights by the developer, around 4000 players have died in the game at the hands of ogres and Bug Bears when they interrupted their intimate moments in the game. This behind-the-scenes anonymous data is parsed which allows the developer to identify the areas of interest for further investigation and to cross-reference against player reports and findings from QA.

Above, you can see the very first Heat Map from Baldur’s Gate 3 which has been cut down to avoid potential spoilers. The map shows areas where the players are dying the most and it will be presented again at the end of the Early Access Campaign to show how the feedback process drives intelligent iteration. Apart from the heat map, Larian has also shared some more interesting death statistics from Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • There’s a huge spike in deaths around the area you first meet Gale, suggesting some players don’t necessarily like it when a smug wizard appears out of a rock. This is a traditionally non-combat encounter, but of course in Baldur’s Gate 3 players can enter into combat with whomever they wish, at almost any moment. This suggests that players are actively engaging in combat with Gale. Is it something he said?
  • On the topic of Gale, he has died a total of 333757 times.
  • However, Gale has a party-member kill-rate 4 times higher than any NPC in the game.
  • Shadowheart is the only companion to die more than the player character; poor Shadowheart.
  • The Owlbear Cub has killed 5717 players.
  • Exactly 4000 people died as a result of interrupting the intimate moments of Ogres and Bug Bears.
  • If you died at the crash site in your encounter with the fallen Mind Flayer, don’t fret, you’re with 3753 others.
