Beginner’s Guide – Metro Exodus

Our Metro Exodus Beginner’s Guide details everything that you need to know to start your journey as Artyom across post-apocalyptic Russia.

Use Stealth Where Possible

Metro Exodus might be an action shooter but stealth helps more than blasting your way through enemies in this game. You must use stealth wherever you can because it will help you conserve resources such as ammo and health kits for times where stealth is not an option. When going against human enemies, you must always try to use stealth.

For this, you can use binoculars to scan areas ahead and mark enemies and areas of interest on your map. Scout enemy hideouts and camps from a safe distance and then plan your move to avoid direct confrontation. Also if you have to eliminate enemies from your path, stick to KO rather than eliminations.

Try to complete missions involving human enemies at night because they will not be able to see properly. On the other hand, watch out for monsters as they spawn more during the night time hindering your approach. Try to extinguish lights and candles as you move around to keep yourself in the dark. Stealth will make your game very easy as compared to gun encounters.

Take Care of Your Equipment

You must maintain your weapons and items by cleaning them. Clean weapons and items are more effective. You can use different workbenches scattered around Russia to maintain your gear. You will need some resources to maintain your equipment but it is always worth to spend a little resources and keep your weapons and items in top condition.

Weapons and items in bad condition lose combat effectiveness and you will be left with weapons that have less accuracy and get jammed often. Use patches to cover holes in your gas mask because you cannot breathe in fresh air without your mask. Keep it free of holes and always patch it up if it gets dirty.

Also get better weapons as you progress in the game. Always keep a secondary weapon handy and with ammo. Look after the weapons and always have the best weapons and attachments. Having better weapons is one thing, maintaining them is another to ensure that you are getting the most out of your weapons. Monsters in Metro Exodus are relentless so make sure that your equipment and weapons is always in the best condition and you have the best ones available.

Understand the UI

Metro Exodus might look like it is missing any sort of UI but all the information is right there in front of you. There are three meters on Artyom’s Left hand. The timer is the air filter timer, the gauge on its left side is the Geiger Counter while at its top is the compass. In safe areas where you can breathe without the air filter, the timer will stop.

The timer only goes down when you are inside toxic air. As the timer trickles down and reaches 1 minute, you will hear a beep and notification to change your filter. Make sure that you have a steady supply of filters and change to a new one right before your current one is worn out. Next is your compass.

The compass is right on top of the air filter and it will point in the direction of your main objective. Use the compass if you are lost and need to find the direction of your next objective. This will only point in the direction of the main objective so keep that in mind. Later, you can switch it out with an enemy detecting device.

The last item on Artyom’s left arm is the Gieger Counter. This shows the level of radiation in your current area. Green shows low radiations, yellow means medium level radiations while red means dangerous levels of radiations. Avoid going in areas which show high levels of radiations or you will die.

Another thing you should know is that your journal is located behind the map. Simply flick it around and your journal will show where Artyom keeps all the important information marked in his journal. You can also find hints if you get stuck in his journal so always check the journal if you are stuck somewhere.

Change Time of Day

You can switch between the time of day by heading to a safe house and sleeping there. It is crucial that you use this helpful mechanic throughout the game because it actually matters this time around. Time of day plays an important role in Metro Exodus. You must change between night and day according to the scenarios.

If you want to explore the world and go on a resource hunt, switch to day time because dangerous monsters sleep during the day time and you can also see easily while there is light in the world. If you want to complete main mission or infiltrate enemy camps, use night’s cover because you can move around in the shadows and humans cannot see well during the night.

Use this mechanic to your advantage and you will greatly make the game easy for yourself. Using stealth is important if you want to get the good ending at the end of the game. When you want to advance time in the game, simply head to a safe zone and sleep to advance the time and then begin your mission.

Scavenge Resources

The world of Metro Exodus is full of resources hiding in every nook and corner. Make sure that whenever you visit any location, explore it thoroughly to gather all available resources there. Look up and down in boxes, rooms, vehicles, storage compartments and other places where you might think something is hiding.

If a place is difficult to find, chances are that it has some really cool loot. Get access to the location and look for resources. You will need these resources to craft useful items in the game such as special ammo types and medkits which are a necessary in the game. There are two types of resources in the game which include chemicals and metals but they must be scavenged.

Also make sure that you loot dead bodies lying around or any enemies that you kill in the game. They will give you something. If you kill human enemies, they will also drop backpacks. Loot them as well to find more resources. You can also scrap dropped weapons for parts so there is always something to loot in the game.

Always Quick Save

Metro Exodus comes with manual saving which is Quick Saving and also auto-saving with different checkpoints throughout the main story. The game manages auto-saves and checkpoints itself but you can always quick save the game manually and we highly recommend that you use quick save.

This will save you a lot of trouble later in the game. You must always save your game before heading into fights or when you reach a safe zone with some resources and workbenches lying around. Make it your habit to use Quick Save and you will thank us later.

Get Rid of Cobwebs

Cobwebs are visually harmless apart from spiders crawling all over your arms sometimes when you go through them, you must always burn them. It turns out that they make your movement slow and if you have to run back from enemies, these nasty cobwebs will slow you down. It does not require any effort from your part.

When you enter a new area, simply take out and light your lighter and then proceed. Holding out your lighter will automatically burn all cobwebs that you try to cross. Burning is harmless although a spider might creep around your arm sometimes. They do not harm you but if you have a fear of spiders, just don’t drop your controller at their sight.

Keep a Track of Your Morality

Although not visible or anything, Metro Exodus brings back the Morality system from the previous two titles in the franchise. Depending on your morality, you will unlock either good or bad ending when you finish the main story of the game. You can check out more details on morality and how to unlock good and bad ending in our Metro Exodus Endings Guide linked below.
