Sony is slowly but surely picking up the pace in allowing cross-play for games on its PS4 console. The company has always been reluctant in allowing cross-play between other platforms, and it has always been one of the biggest requests by players of the many games it has. Last October, Sony announced that the first phase of its cross-play beta mode has ended and that the feature would now be available to all developers as a complete feature.
During its beta phase, players were able to try out an extremely small number of titles which included Rocket League and Fortnite. Both the games were supporting cross-play for a long time and it was working without any problems. Sony Executive Shawn Layden announced over at the PlayStation Blogcast held in October, explaining why it the company so long to allow cross-play, and what challenges they had to face.
… enabling crossplay isn’t just about flipping a switch and there you go. It’s a very multidimensional kind of attribute or feature. So we had to look at it from a technical point of view, we have to work with our partners from a business point of view. We have to make sure that if we enable this, do we have the right customer service support, do we have the right messaging out there, do we have all these different things that you have to get in line. It’s rather ordinal, they have to go in a certain order to get them all set up. That’s why, though it’s taken us longer.
On the other hand, PC and Xbox One players have been enjoying Minecraft cross-play for more than two years since it was last announced. The companies also took a jab at Sony when it was the featured was announced in cooperation of both platforms.
Our bodies are ready. What are we building?
