Independent developer QUByte Interactive has released a new Dev Diary, providing an in-depth look into the audio design of their forthcoming futuristic action adventure, MARS 2120. This latest installment in a series of Dev Diaries delves into the soundscapes crafted for the Martian setting ahead of the game’s 1.0 launch on PC (via Steam and Epic Store), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox Series consoles on August 1st.
The team at QUByte Interactive drew inspiration from renowned composers like Vangelis, known for his work on Blade Runner, and Michael Nyman, famed for the Gattaca soundtrack. These influences guided their collaboration with various composers to develop an auditory experience that complements each environment and scene within the game. The soundscape is a blend of electronic and orchestral elements, designed to evoke a wide spectrum of emotions, from anxiety and danger to wonder, suspense, and adrenaline.

Rather than relying on typical sci-fi sounds, the team sought to understand the emotional impact of music on the player. They aimed to create an epic Martian adventure where the music and sound effects are as visually impactful as they are auditory, achieving a form of kinesthesia where the senses of sight and sound are intertwined.
In MARS 2120, humanity has colonized various planets in the solar system, providing an escape from the increasingly bleak conditions on Earth. The game’s narrative kicks off when the UN receives a distress call from Mars, prompting Sergeant Anna “Thirteen” Charlotte and her elite team of space marines to embark on a rescue mission. Players will navigate a harsh Martian landscape, battling formidable and mysterious foes with a combination of ranged and melee attacks, alongside elemental skills.
MARS 2120 offers a non-linear approach to combat and exploration, drawing inspiration from genre pioneers like Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The game promises an 8-hour action-packed Metroidvania experience, blending satisfying combat with cinematic storytelling. As players traverse the Martian terrain, they will encounter a variety of challenges and adversaries, requiring strategic use of their skills and abilities.
MARS 2120 is slated for release on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. Whether you are drawn to its atmospheric audio, engaging gameplay, or intriguing storyline, MARS 2120 promises to be a standout title in the Metroidvania genre.
