Indie game developer Reverting Castles has announced the launch of a brand-new demo for the upcoming 2D-pixel art action game Demon Crush. Now available on Steam, the demo, titled Kenzo’s Fury, gives you a first look at the hyperkinetic ninja action set in feudal Japan. In this initial level, you can experience fast-paced combat as you wield three different weapons: the tonfa, staff, and kusarigama, fighting through hordes of enemies with fluid martial arts techniques.
Demon Crush centers on Kenzo Yagimoto, a guardian warrior and the last hope for Gochima Village, which is under siege by invading soldiers and demons. As Kenzo, you must battle against warlords, beasts, magicians, and supernatural creatures to defend the ancient kingdom. The game challenges you to master each weapon, creating your combos using the tonfa, staff, and kusarigama, all mapped to different buttons to provide dynamic and customizable combat. Each martial arts technique offers unique timing and tactical advantages, allowing for a personalized and strategic approach to the relentless enemies.

Inspired by retro classics like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi, Demon Crush is designed for replayability, incorporating a scoring system that rates you based on your performance at each level. Speed and style are rewarded, making the game appealing to both casual you and those looking for a challenge, including speedrunners and streamers. The game even includes optional in-game timers and controller status readouts for those aiming to show off their skills.
The demo release is part of a larger push to support the game’s development. Reverting Castles has launched a Kickstarter campaign to gather additional funding, with plans to hire a level designer and expand the game for PC and consoles. The demo is meant to showcase the game’s already complex combat system, demonstrating that Demon Crush is more than just a concept. Game Director Richard Hinckley emphasized that Demon Crush is a modern reimagining of beloved retro games, brought to life with contemporary technology. He hopes you enjoy the demo and encourages feedback to help refine the final game.
Demon Crush will be available in 14 languages, including English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Russian, among others. To support the development of the game, you can head over to its Kickstarter and support the developer. You can also head over to its official Steam page and add the game to your wishlist if you like the demo. Demon Crush will be released some time later and additional details about the game will be announced later.
