PlayStation 5 Fan Lottery Responsible for Noisier Consoles

PS5 SSD Expansion Guide

According to French tech website Les Numériques, Sony has installed a number of different cooling fans in the PlayStation 5 consoles and these different fans are responsible for Noisier consoles for many users. The French outlet noticed a noticeable variation in the noise level of two PS5 consoles and after disassembling 5 consoles, the tech outlet found 5 different fans in all of the PlayStation 5s.

When PS5 first came out, it was not known that multiple different types of fans are being used in the consoles and even Sony did not say anything about it. But Les Numériques’ disassembly of five different consoles shows a whole another story.

In Pictures released by the French tech outlet, two different fans can be seen, one from the review unit and one from a retail unit. The retail unit has a fan having 17 blades whereas the review unit sent by Sony has 23 fan blades. According to the information, the Review unit PS5 was much quieter than the one that was purchased.

It is a general principle that the more blades a fan has, the less power it has to consume to move more air and in return, it will spin with less speed and noise and also provide better cooling. With the differences in fans here, it could be assumed that the fans with fewer blades are ramping up more to provide more cooling and as a result creating more noise.

The discovery is quite alarming for consumers, many of them seeing Sony’s official PlayStation 5 teardown and expecting to have the same components. So far, there haven’t been any major heating complaints and issues from users so it seems like the fans are doing their job, albeit with making a bit more noise.

We will have to wait and see if Sony provides any official confirmation and clarity on this issue.
