PlayStation Ready To Acquire More Game Development Studios

PlayStation Game Studios

PlayStation has had a great couple of years with their exclusive games and it looks like the company is now ready to get more game development studios on board. High budget exclusives have made Sony a lot of money and it seems that the company is going to continue using this approach.

SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan mentioned that mergers and acquisitions are being planned right now. PlayStation currently has 13 game development studios across Europe, the US and Japan but that number could increase in the future.

Xbox Scarlett and PS5 are coming next year and Microsoft has been actively adding game studios so PlayStation might as well do the same. It will come down to the launch titles and the exclusive games as well as the pricing to see which console beats the other.

PS4 has won the console war this time but Microsoft could do better with the Xbox Scarlett. Here is what Ryan had to say regarding the matter:

I think it would be nice if we found an Asian studio, in particular a Japanese studio, to add [to our studios]. I liked it when we had some first-party capability in Japan. We have a small team there, but I think we can do more.

The next generation of consoles is going to be very interesting indeed. 4K 60 FPS gameplay is going to be the new standard for consoles. Faster storage is also being added into the mix which means reduced loading times.

With all that in mind, Sony not only has to compete with Xbox Scarlett but with the Nintendo Switch and other platforms such as Google Stadia and Project xCloud as well. Jack Tretton Ex PlayStation USA Boss has already mentioned this in the past. According to him, Sony will have more competition than ever before in the gaming space.

It will be interesting to see which game development studios PlayStation decides to pick up in the upcoming few months. Sony is going to need some exclusive games and launch titles to sell the PS5 and the same goes for the Xbox Scarlett.

Let us know what you think about PlayStation adding more game development studios to its portfolio and which game studios you would like PlayStation to acquire next.
