A Pokemon GO and One Piece special crossover event have been confirmed by Niantic. The announcement was made over at the official Japanese Twitter account for the Pokemon GO game on Tuesday.
Pokemon Go is a collaboration with the creator of One Piece Eiichiro Oda by turning the Straw Hat Pirates statues in the prefecture into in-game Pokestops. In addition, a Pikachu wearing the straw hat will also feature in the game from July 22 to 29. The straw hat is an iconic item in the One Piece universe representing the hat that the protagonist Monkey D. Luffy wears at all times.
One piece statue will be placed in Kumamoto, Japan during this event. There will also be a Pokestop that will feature the art from Eiichiro Oda. The event is a part of the “revitalization campaign” that is going to help and support the rebuilding of Kumamoto city after it was hit by a devastating earthquake this year.
If you are unaware of One Piece, it is a famous show based on a manga that features a crew of pirates who are sailing across the seas to find the ultimate treasure. The show features Monkey D. Luffy who is a young pirate with the ability to be flexible and elastic after consuming a rare devil fruit. The show has found decent success worldwide, but it is a very popular show in Japan.
It is the top-selling manga of all time, after having sold over 450 million copies over its 22-year history, making it one of the biggest media franchises of all time. While Pokemon is still larger than One Piece, Luffy is still considered more popular in Japan as opposed to Pikachu.
