In this Pokemon Sword and Shield Evolution Guide, we will guide you on how you can evolve different Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Most of the Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield evolve normally after hitting a certain level however some Pokemon such as Haunter, Sinistea, Sneasel, Linoone and more require special items or processes for them to evolve to their next form. They do not evolve after simply hitting a particular level as you progress in your game.
We have curated this Pokemon Sword and Shield Evolution Guide for you in which we have listed all such Pokemon which require a special procedure or item before they are evolved to their next form. Below you will find plenty of rare and unique evolution methods that are unique to their particular Pokemon and you cannot apply to any other Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
Evolution Guide – Pokemon Sword and Shield
Our Pokemon Sword and Shield Evolution Guide details everything that you need to know about evolving your Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Before we start this guide, we would like to mention here that this is not a compendium of all Pokemon and their evolution. This guide only lists those Pokemon whose evolution is different from the regular Pokemon who level up simply by hitting a particular level.
Sneasel
If you want to evolve your Sneasel into a Weavile, you will need to follow a few steps which starts by increasing the level of your Sneasel. Make sure your Sneasel is at least a Level 20 or above. In addition, your Sneasel must have a Razor Claw which can be purchased from the Battle Points Store. Once it is done as well, level up your Sneasel during the night time and it will evolve into Weavile.
Haunter
Haunter is another Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield which cannot be evolved by traditional methods. Haunter evolves only when you trade it with another trainer. This trainer also needs to be a real human and not an AI. Things get complicated here because if the trainer you are trading with refuses to trade your Gengar back to you, you might be left without a Haunter as well let alone a Gengar.
Snom
Snom is another Pokemon that requires to form a bond with the trainer before it can evolve its form. To evolve Snom you first need to be very good friends with it. Play with it, win some battles and take good care of it. Once done, wait for the night time and level up your Snom to evolve it to Frosmoth.
Yamask
Evolving Yamask to Runerigus is even trickier than the methods we have detailed above so far. The first step is to make sure that your Yamask has enough health points. Its HP has to be enough that after sustaining 49 damage, it still survives. After you’ve managed this bit, head to Dusty Bowl in the Wild Area and look for the large Lion-King inspired rock which has a passage under it as well. Now you need to pass under this rock with your Yamask and it will trigger the evolution.
Linoone
Linoone evolves into Obstagoon only when you reach Level 35 and after that level it up during night time. It will not evolve during the day time even if you level up so reach level 35 and then level up during the night time to trigger the evolution.
Sinistea
Sinistea evolves into Polteageist and is one of the most unique Pokemon in the game. Its evolution process is even more unique than its evolution form. To evolve your Sinistea to Polteageist, you will require a very special item called Cracked Pot. You can find a Cracked Pot at the special item seller in the Stow-on-Side market. He gets a new special item for each day however one of the items that he gets in a Cracked Pot. If you do not want to wait for it to appear with him, you can head behind the market and use the ladder to get to the rooftops. Explore here and you will a Cracked Pot.
Toxel
Toxel comes with 2 evolution forms and depending on its nature, it will evolve into one of these forms. The two forms depending on its nature are Amped and Low Key. Both forms require that Toxel must be at least level 30 before it can evolve. After that, depending on the type of its nature, it will either evolve into its Amped up Form or Low Key Form. The type of natures that dictate its evolution form are detailed below.
Amped up Form | Low Key Form |
Impish | Bashful |

Adamant | Gentle |
Docile | Lonely |
