Pokemon Sword and Shield Getting 2 Massive Expansions in 2020

Pokemon Sword Shield: The Isle of Armor

Nintendo held its first direct last week which was specifically a Pokemon Direct and featured all news about Pokemon Sword and Shield. The latest titles in the franchise had an exceptional launch last fall and were critically acclaimed both by fans and critics. During the Direct presentation, Game Freak announced that they are making the games even better this year by releasing two massive expansions for the Pokemon Sword and Shield.

The two new expansions are called The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. Both of these expansions will be available to both Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. However, both games will have their own Expansion Pass. If you own both Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, you will need to purchase a separate Expansion Pass to access the expansions in both games which seems a little unfair.

Pokemon Sword Shield Expansions

Starting with The Isle of Armor, this expansion pack will arrive in June 2020 and will take players to a brand new island where players will be able to explore the new setting and catch some new Pokemon. A new mentor Mustard will be present in this expansion who will train the Pokemon Trainers and similar to the base games, the expansions will have content specific to the versions the players have. The main theme of this expansion pass is growth. Kubfu is the Legendary Pokemon for this expansion.

The second expansion is The Crown Tundra which the name suggests is based on a snowy area in the Galar region. Apart from the snowy environments, the DLC will also allow players to explore the brand new Pokemon dens in the area which will also open up the co-op aspect of the game. Players will be able to invite their friends along and explore these caverns together where they will encounter Legendary Pokemon including the brand new Legendary Calyrex. The main theme of this expansion is exploration.

Both expansions will bring back many of the Pokemon from previous generations into the game along with some brand new never before seen Pokemon as well. The Crown Tundra will arrive at a later date in Fall 2020. A confirmed release month is not known at this point but it could be the holiday season or before that. Game Freak will reveal more details about the expansions in the coming days.
