Sony has pretty much confirmed that like the PS4 Pro, the PS5 will have no native support for 1440p outputs. The news comes from official Sony representatives who confirmed to IGN Italy that the PS5 doesn’t support 1440p natively which ends the previous speculations of the PS5 supporting the 1440p resolution as it was hinted by monitor manufacturer BenQ.
Users will still be able to connect their PS5 consoles to 1440p displays and still play games but it will most likely be a 1080p signal upscaled to 1440p which doesn’t look nice. In the previous generation, the PS4 Pro also supported only 1080p and 4K natively even though the major number of games that ran at PS4 Pro were running at 1440p which was then upscaled to 4K in output.
In their official statement to IGN Italy, Sony says that the PS5 will not support the native resolution at 1440p, a resolution that is certainly “irrelevant” for most players, but very “dear” to PC gamers.
This news will surely be a blow to the users owning a 1440p display. 1440p (2K) displays are mostly common in the PC gaming community and are mostly found in 24 to 27-inch displays. The Xbox Series S will support 1440p as it has been specifically designed around that resolution, and Microsoft has said the Series X will support it as well.
And Sony giving the preference to couch and tv-gamers is nothing new and even though they have started to allow some of their games like Horizon Zero Dawn to be ported to PC, they still are primarily about the console-TV experience. And the majority of the TVs in the current market are either 1080p or 4K so Sony not working to supporting 1440p might make some sense.
The PlayStation 5 console will be launching in North America and other select territories on November 12th and in the rest of the world on November 19th.
