AI has never been something that console developers have looked into as something vital but that could change with the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Anaconda. NPC crowd tech deals with how NPCs react to players and this is an area where games have not really advanced. Youichiro Miyake, Square Enix’s lead AI researcher talked about how the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Anaconda will take advantage of AI features.
These AI features will also be able to tell how good of a gamer you are and will also detect different patterns and learn the player’s playstyle as well. The following is what Miyake had to say in this regard:
Another piece of the future of AI is obviously going to be machine learning coming in. You’re going to see more and more AI that reacts to a player’s playstyle, to their personality. Are they a good gamer, a bad gamer, do they tend to go into combat, or are they exploratory? We’re going to analyze those patterns and then the character AI will largely have a lot of automation, analyzing these patterns and dynamically adjusting to that playstyle.
He mentioned that much of the AI part of these consoles will be in the hands of the programmers and this could mean that AI features of the PS5 and Xbox Anaconda will be game-specific and will depend on the developer rather than Sony or Microsoft. What we can say is that these consoles will be powerful enough to support such features and that is something that we are looking forward to checking out.
Gaming has evolved over the years and so has the hardware that runs these games. Miyake further went on to mention the following:
However, a lot of the evolution of AI is going to come in the meta AI level, which will be controlled by the programmers. So them defining the overall rulesets of the game, but within it there’s pocket-sized machine learning-based AI – that’s probably the new thing we’re going to see with AI evolution.
Sony has already confirmed some of the specifications of the PS5. Reports have claimed that the upcoming Xbox is going to be much better than the PS5 but only time will tell.
