Double Fine Delays Psychonauts 2, Release Pushed for Next Year

Psychonauts 2 Delayed

Double Fine boss Tim Schafer has announced that the much-awaited sequel Psychonauts 2 is delayed and will release next year in 2020. The game was previously scheduled to release in 2018, which was delayed to this year in 2019.

Double Fine’s Tim Schafer made the announcement on a post update,

We’re now targeting next year for release. We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who – just like us – want the game to be as good as possible. So we’re hopeful you’ll understand! <3

Psychonauts 2 is the sequel to the 2005 hit game Psychonauts. It was previously announced back in 2015 to be getting a sequel at the Game Awards. The delay may upset fans who were expecting it this year after Double Fine’s appearance at E3 2019 last month.

Though it may be disappointing, some positives that we can take from the delay is that the game can further be polished to be better as a final product. Since the game is crowdfunded, it means more resources can be used to make it an even bigger game. Hopefully, we can get an announcement date for next year, and the game can come out without any further delays.

Tim Schafer had previously released a video update at E3 when he reiterated the need for the team to develop the game at their own pace. They do not want to rush things and after the acquisition of the studio by Microsoft, this would likely have given the developers more freedom to develop a much better game than previously planned.

Lastly, Tim also mentions that the acquisition does not affect the game’s release on every promised platform. The game would in fact still be releasing for the PlayStation 4.
