Riot Games Settle Gender Discrimination Lawsuit, Will Pay $10 Million

Riot Games Lawsuit

Riot Games has reportedly settled the gender discrimination lawsuit where the game studio agreed to pay $10 million to female employees. According to Kotaku, this includes around 1,000 female employees that worked at the studio in the last five years.

The developer was sued last month when a former and a current employee had filed a lawsuit over unequal pay and stifled careers for being women. The plaintiffs also complained about the working conditions that were playing a negative impact such as the ongoing sexual harassment misconduct and bias which was setting a sexually hostile working environment in Riot Games.

This is not the only accusation against Riot Games, as it has previously been accused of hiring candidates on the basis of nude pictures. Earlier in the year, employees staged a walkout in May because of the sexual harassment and discrimination in the company.

Amidst all the accusations that were arising back in May, a Reddit user ser posted her experience and mentioned how she was going to get a job at Riot Games because of how she looked and that the hiring officer had heard that she had posted her nudes online. She shared the messages that she received from the person trying to hire her at Riot Games and they are as follows:

Just had to say it because you posted the Nidalee pics again, that body is absolutely impeccable. Beauty, brilliance, and witty, easiest hire I ever made. I had to fight to hire you because there was a rumor you had posted nude pics on some site. (I have to admit, I tried like hell to find them).

The walkout was also to protest the forced arbitration where Riot Games hired their employees, the studio made them sign an arbitration clause that meant that they would not be allowed to take any legal actions against the company. Instead, they must go through private arbitration, which is basically a legal system without a judge or jury. Such agreements are tactics used by companies to prevent getting sued by their employees.
